Celebrate the art of Hayao Miyazaki and the North American theatrical release of his last film, "The Wind Rises" by creating a very special Tribute to the film's art. Your Tribute will be used to promote the release of "The Wind Rises" on DeviantART.

We ask that you combine elements from the images provided in the Asset Pack with your own inspiration to build your Tribute artwork.

"The Wind Rises" tells the story of one of Japan's most important aviation engineers against the backdrop of the major events of the 20th century. Critics have been overwhelmed by the artistry in this final masterwork from the brilliant animator and storyteller, Hayao Miyazaki. This is your opportunity to enter into his world and recast its elements into a final Tribute.

The three winning entries will be used on deviantART to promote the film's release. Each winning artwork will be made into a framed presentation print sent to Studio Ghibli in Japan.

HAYAO MIYAZAKI (Director) was born in 1941 in Tokyo. After graduating from Gakushuin University in 1963 with a degree in political science and economics, he joined Toei Animation Company as an animator. He worked under the director Isao Takahata for scene planning and key animation for the production of "The Little Norse Prince Valiant" (1968). He then moved to the animation studio A Production with Takahata in 1971 where he worked on the original concept, screenplay, layout design and key animation for "Panda! Go Panda!" (1972). He worked at various studios such as Zuiyo Eizo, Nippon Animation and Telecom, and did scene planning and layout designs for the TV series "Heidi, A Girl of the Alps" (1974) and "From the Apennines to the Andes" (1976), and directed his first TV series "Conan, the Boy in Future" (1978). He debuted as director of a theatrical feature with "The Castle of Cagliostro" (1979). Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 with Takahata, and has directed eight feature films since. His film "Spirited Away" (2001) broke every box-office record in Japan, and garnered many awards, including the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival and the Oscar® for Best Animated Feature Film at the 2003 U.S. Academy Awards, and "Howl's Moving Castle" (2004)

So if you're a premium member, you don't even get to see the banners, good job Da.

Also no listing of who one or anything, you guys still look like you're going allowing people to enter by the look of this journal.

It's really concerning to someone who entered if we won or not.

this was the most pointless contest ever. The only person who deserved to win this was the second winner, there where HUNDREDS of more worthy drawings than that of what you picked DA staff. I thought day one was disappointing. This is silly and Im kinda baffled how one of the greater artists who CLEARLY is greatly talented didnt win. ONE of the all time popular ones win, and then did you guys just pick the rest out of a hat? Sure seems that way. I also agree with Gio, who did the judging, and WHY did they win when the depth of that last winner is flawed compared to again, HUNDREDS of other submissions. I feel there was greater talent present in this contest and it was over looked.

I completely agree. I thought it was based off artistic skill and I'm 100% sure it wasn't now.

I'm glad I didn't just think the same thing ^^" I was feeling bad about being disappointed with the winners, even though they worked hard too. But I was actually surprised with the originality. I think I misunderstood and thought the challenge was about using inspiration from asset images to create an artistic advertisement tribute to Miyazaki's film and style. In my mind, being original wasn't exactly promoted in the rules. If it was, then why was there the option to use the asset images to make a collage? But then they ignore the 'common' styles and choose totally different winners, which is fine. But those winners don't even end up being out of the more original artistic pieces!? So its kind of confusing me... I don't know how they chose them.

So is there going to be actual information on why these entries won? You know so we can get information from the judges and see what qualifies them to judge?
It does nothing for the rest of the artist when Zero feedback is shown. For all we know random people with zero knowledge on composition, color theory and actual art / and software are judging these things because they prefer one Anime style over another. The last few contest pretty much were played out that way. Hell we don't even know who the judges even are.

I kind of want this information too.
I don't think it would be fair to be judged by someone who knows nothing about art.

It does nothing to help other artist improve without some kind of Critique on why the winning entries won. It shows us how in depth the judges actually looked at the works and what kind of qualifications those people hold by the way they speak. When nothing is said it just give the impression that whatever was picked because it just suited whatever style they have a bias for. If a judge can't go into depth about the basics of art they shouldn't be judging art. Some artworks could have the most thought out color and line choices that completely blows away someone using effect layers in say Photoshop. But if the judge doesn't have the eye for it then the whole thing was pointless.

Will there be a list of who won, because I just found out how to see the winners, and it's the last day they will be showing them! I really wanted to see who won.............

maplekeurig In reply to Efureie [2014-03-01 08:13:11 +0000 UTC]

They'll be showing them tomorrow too.
It says March 1st/2nd
But if you're a premium member you can't even see the winner's banner unless you sign out?

Efureie In reply to maplekeurig [2014-03-01 08:25:11 +0000 UTC]

I just open an "incognito" window in Google Chrome! Then when I go to dA, I'm not logged in and AdBlock is disabled ^^ It's stupid how the banners are treated as ads. They are advertising artists on the website, but it's something most people actually WANT to see....

And thanks, I misread the dates XD But I missed the one on Feb 28th....

And this is just my opinion, I know they're picking the winners on impact/creativity/artistic skill, but there's some amazing ones I wish were picked. (Not even my own, but really! I'm kind of set back by their choices!!)

Efureie In reply to maplekeurig [2014-03-03 13:39:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, like this one   by AngelaRizza ! I really thought that would have won! It's breathtakingly beautiful!

I think it's kind of okay for them to judge on originality and impact and creativity I guess, but it's not fair to judge someone's skill! This frustrated me in the Lightning Returns contest, too. Why make it 13+ if no young artists even have a chance!? I know there are many exceptions to this and there are many artists younger than me who are also better, but still..... I guess it is more harsh if the contest is for fanart. They'd probably only pick entries from older people.

I think it was 18+ because it's easier to give the prizes to adults than to children. They'd have to get permission and such.
I don't think that was really a big deal.
It is pretty fair to judge the skill of someone. I mean, I doubt that's what they did since people with far greater skill than the winners won, but still.

I really liked the way that one looked, but it didn't really make me think of the movie at all |'D;;
BUt it seems like so much time went into it though.

kinda makes you feel even worse about your own entry when something even greater than you didnt get picked. its like what were they even after image wise because the choices are so.. boring.

^^^
I was really rooting for the person who made the plane into an ACTUAL BIRD
This was supposed to be judged on originality, right?
Oh my gosh then there was the entry that drew an actual airplane hanger - It was amazing
originality and artistic skill had nothing to do with this contest and if I had known that then I'd have never entered

NefariousSovereign In reply to maplekeurig [2014-03-02 19:26:33 +0000 UTC]

Same here, cause if you look, there are people who spend more time and love on their drawing then those who won, I only like the second winner to be honest...the other two could have been WAY better choices. Im sad I even wasted my time getting a submission into this BS contest. And that pic youre talking about was my favourite, it was one of the top faves wasnt it? and HOW wasnt it picked. The color on it is so vivid and full but they picked ones that are flat and dont even look finished. There are small mistakes and flaws, where as other ones were pro as fuck.

maplekeurig In reply to NefariousSovereign [2014-03-02 19:47:29 +0000 UTC]

I completely agree - The second one was so amazing , it showed the entire plot in one picture and it was stunning-

I always told myself I would never enter a dA contest because 9/10 it's a popularity contest.
Apparently the other 1/10 is this crap where they pick whatever without any reasoning behind it.
I'm not saying the entries won weren't well drawn, but seriously, come on. This is seriously ridiculous.

This was all a huge disappointment.

I agree with you! Even though the 3 picks were great works of art and they deserved it, I didn't expect those ones to be chosen...

Ah the one for Febuary 28 was this one : www.deviantart.com/art/The-Win…
I thought they were going to just put them all at the top and let us scan through them, but I guess not! |D
It's it pretty stupid that they're being treated like adds |'D
It makes things a hassle kind of

Efureie In reply to maplekeurig [2014-03-03 13:46:04 +0000 UTC]

Crap, I forgot about the contest again DX I got to see the others though. Thanks

And that would have been nice. What about people who weren't able to see them? Like me X'D //shot

And that is dumb. It doesn't make much sense. They should have treated it like those things they put waaaay at the top when they have sales on prints, not like an ad. Maybe they will fix this since everyone keeps complaining about it XD

Why the heck is this excluding Quebec while admitting the rest of Canada?????

Chikantan In reply to daisukimanga [2014-03-01 01:02:12 +0000 UTC]

For the same reason Quebec is excluded from most contests. Their regional laws are too strict/too much of a hassle for most contests to work around. So they exclude them for ease. Sorry. ):
