Submit Entry

Celebrate the art of Hayao Miyazaki and the North American theatrical release of his last film, "The Wind Rises" by creating a very special Tribute to the film's art. Your Tribute will be used to promote the release of "The Wind Rises" on DeviantART.

We ask that you combine elements from the images provided in the Asset Pack with your own inspiration to build your Tribute artwork.

"The Wind Rises" tells the story of one of Japan's most important aviation engineers against the backdrop of the major events of the 20th century. Critics have been overwhelmed by the artistry in this final masterwork from the brilliant animator and storyteller, Hayao Miyazaki. This is your opportunity to enter into his world and recast its elements into a final Tribute.

The three winning entries will be used on deviantART to promote the film's release. Each winning artwork will be made into a framed presentation print sent to Studio Ghibli in Japan.

HAYAO MIYAZAKI (Director) was born in 1941 in Tokyo. After graduating from Gakushuin University in 1963 with a degree in political science and economics, he joined Toei Animation Company as an animator. He worked under the director Isao Takahata for scene planning and key animation for the production of "The Little Norse Prince Valiant" (1968). He then moved to the animation studio A Production with Takahata in 1971 where he worked on the original concept, screenplay, layout design and key animation for "Panda! Go Panda!" (1972). He worked at various studios such as Zuiyo Eizo, Nippon Animation and Telecom, and did scene planning and layout designs for the TV series "Heidi, A Girl of the Alps" (1974) and "From the Apennines to the Andes" (1976), and directed his first TV series "Conan, the Boy in Future" (1978). He debuted as director of a theatrical feature with "The Castle of Cagliostro" (1979). Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 with Takahata, and has directed eight feature films since. His film "Spirited Away" (2001) broke every box-office record in Japan, and garnered many awards, including the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival and the Oscar® for Best Animated Feature Film at the 2003 U.S. Academy Awards, and "Howl's Moving Castle" (2004)

received the Osella Award at the 2004 Venice International Film Festival. Miyazaki was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2005 Venice International Film Festival. Wow! So many awesome entries! This is mine.

It's the first time I've worked with an image this size. Took me awhile to figure out the sunset. Not bad for using a nearly 15 yr old art program. Sketching Nohoko before scanning the elements in was especially challenging too.

Best of luck to everyone!

BULLSHIT.

IT IS NOWHERE NEAR ME.

I WOULD HAVE TO DRIVE 2 HOURS AND 12 MINUTES TO SEE A 2 HOUR AND 6 MINUTE FILM.

I AM SO HEARTBROKEN.

THAT'S IT, I'M MOVING TO JAPAN.

Yeah I'm using Chrome and it didn't show up, but I also checked Internet Explorer and it didn't show up either.

It's up for me on Firefox. Does it work for Chrome now? (I might just be on after it was showing for a while- it's 1:30PM here)

I hope the judges pick an original piece not just made from digital. What is the point if they allow traditional work (drawing, watercolor, etc.) and they don't even pick one.

Some of the good ones are digital.

haha How many other people got an entry in right before the deadline?? I didn't really intend to make another submission but I managed to submit a 2nd one with just under 2 hours to spare. Finished it just in time!:

This has been an awesome contest and I really enjoyed coming up with pieces to pay tribute to Miyazaki and the film. Everyone has done such a fantastic job. Congratulations to EVERYONE who participated for making this such a wonderful homage to an incredible film maker. Studio Ghibli has some incredibly dedicated and talented fans.

Question on this, "licensed brushes and textures are acceptable as well as original assets from the Entrant's own work and visual elements from the Film. "
What about those that copied and pasted pieces of maps/atlases, etc? Is that okay if it's not their actual work?

It shouldnt be, in my opinion... Especially considering the people who drew everything from their own talent and not copying

The US-Canada only entries is a bs!
Deviant should stop doing this.

Awww, I am so impressed by everyone's entries! It's so awesome to look around and see the same criteria interpreted so vastly different ^_^. Really shows the creativity from the artists here!

I really loved this contest and can't wait to see the winners. Good luck, everyone!

I submitted my artwork a couple days ago, I'm not expecting to win I'm just happy that I was able to support such an awesome director/writer. This was my first full digital artwork ever. I am happy I was able to learn from the experience so much, now I know what I need to work on and what to do and what not to do for next time.

finished my entry entry! I'm really excited to see all the awesome entries! I submitted mine last night but I'm a little panicked because i don't see it with the other entries.

Lanmana In reply to Twin-Earth [2014-02-27 20:56:22 +0000 UTC]

You might have had the same thing that I panicked about then. When I submitted I didn't see mine either, until I realized DA keeps automatically setting my results to "popular all time" in the left side of the screen. Try changing those settings to see more entries that aren't in the popular section, I hope you find it! Trust me I panicked too D:

Awesome! Glad to know I'm not the only one! Now I'm even having a hard time even seeing the winners announcement too. Everyone keeps saying it's on the main page but i don't see it! Maybe being on a mobile version of the site doesn't help either.  :/
