Celebrate the art of Hayao Miyazaki and the North American theatrical release of his last film, "The Wind Rises" by creating a very special Tribute to the film's art. Your Tribute will be used to promote the release of "The Wind Rises" on DeviantART. We ask that you combine elements from the images provided in the Asset Pack with your own inspiration to build your Tribute artwork. "The Wind Rises" tells the story of one of Japan's most important aviation engineers against the backdrop of the major events of the 20th century. Critics have been overwhelmed by the artistry in this final masterwork from the brilliant animator and storyteller, Hayao Miyazaki. This is your opportunity to enter into his world and recast its elements into a final Tribute. The three winning entries will be used on deviantART to promote the film's release. Each winning artwork will be made into a framed presentation print sent to Studio Ghibli in Japan. Contest Ends Contest Closed Step 1: Learn About "The Wind Rises" View the trailer for "The Wind Rises" and read the synopsis for the film. Then download and review the Asset Pack. Read Official Rules View Entries Submit Entry HAYAO MIYAZAKI (Director) was born in 1941 in Tokyo. After graduating from Gakushuin University in 1963 with a degree in political science and economics, he joined Toei Animation Company as an animator. He worked under the director Isao Takahata for scene planning and key animation for the production of "The Little Norse Prince Valiant" (1968). He then moved to the animation studio A Production with Takahata in 1971 where he worked on the original concept, screenplay, layout design and key animation for "Panda! Go Panda!" (1972). He worked at various studios such as Zuiyo Eizo, Nippon Animation and Telecom, and did scene planning and layout designs for the TV series "Heidi, A Girl of the Alps" (1974) and "From the Apennines to the Andes" (1976), and directed his first TV series "Conan, the Boy in Future" (1978). He debuted as director of a theatrical feature with "The Castle of Cagliostro" (1979). In 1984, Miyazaki wrote and directed his feature "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind," based on his original graphic novel which had been serialized in the monthly animation magazine "Animage." Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 with Takahata, and has directed eight feature films since. His film "Spirited Away" (2001) broke every box-office record in Japan, and garnered many awards, including the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival and the Oscar® for Best Animated Feature Film at the 2003 U.S. Academy Awards, and "Howl's Moving Castle" (2004) received the Osella Award at the 2004 Venice International Film Festival. Miyazaki was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2005 Venice International Film Festival. "Ponyo" (2008) was his most recent directorial effort. He also contributed to the planning and wrote the screenplay for the Ghibli's newest films "The Secret World of Arrietty" (2010) and "From Up on Poppy Hill" (2011). Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises" was released on July 20, 2013 in Japan. Miyazaki has published a number of books of essays, drawings and poems, including "Shuppatsuten1979 1996 (Starting Point: 1979 1996, 1996)." Can you add tags to this contest so that others can find this in the deviantart search engine, and also can you share your art to sites like facebook and tumblr without being penalized or disqualified? I really want to be careful here so sorry for asking stupid questions like this lol.

I spoke to my dad about it, and he told me that it might be because Loto-Québec ask for so much money when someone outside Québec wants to organize a contest in Québec that most of the time that person just give up and don't do it.... But yeah that might not be it X)
But that's kind of strange because it's the first time I see that happening in a DA contest but like less than 3 days ago, the contest of Lighting Returns was open worldwide and there wasn't any restricted location concerning Québec... so yeah I'm lost concerning that problem haha

To my understanding, Quebec has a different set of laws that make it difficult for contests/sweepstakes to be valid there. I guess just google it if you want more info.

Are characters and only images from the image pack, and the trailer provided on Da allowed to be used? Or can you use parts of "The Wind Rises" trailers on YouTube and seperate related images from Studio Ghibli as well?
Thanks!

are we only allowed to redraw the scenes from the images/trailer provided or can we create an original idea from how we interpret them all? the wording makes me think i can only redraw the scenes in my style without any changes....? or am I reading it wrong.. just want to clarify

The contest article says: "Compose your Tribute to the film by using the images in the Asset Pack and/or your own inspiration from viewing the trailer and reading the synopsis."

i think what confused me was the "You may use elements from the images provided or reproduce the images themselves using any drawing, painting or digital medium other than photography" where it says reproduce the images...

I took that to mean you could copy anything in the assets in your style, especially since it added "using any drawing, painting or digital medium other than photography." Normally it's frowned upon to just simply copy another artist's work and claim it as your own.

indeed. i was going to draw something based on how i imagined the film would be like then i thought maybe theyd prefer something more just how the original film actually is OTL;;

Well, this "contest" (and others like it - promos of movies/games/products/etc) are just an avenue for free/cheap spec work; they're looking for advertisement illustrations without having to pay a bunch of artists for pieces to choose from. Here, only the "winner" gets paid, and they have hundreds or thousands of submissions to choose between. In that regard, they probably want it to at least generally reflect the content of the movie.

Why not write to your local Member of Parliament (MP) & ask what you can do to get such silly laws changed.^^

According to what I read, I think that pictures of your art will be acceptable. However, may have misread something so I would take my advice with a grain of salt. Additionally as a tip I would make sure that only your piece is seen in the photograph. I hope this helps.

It seems to be a habit here that each and every contest I'm really interested in is for Americans only. Too bad.
