On another note, I haven't played any of the fate games. What are those about?

A basic explanation of the Fate series is that they involve the Holy Grail War, which is a battle to the death between 7 mages, called Masters and their 7 familiars, called Servants. Servants are Heroic Spirits. Heroic Spirits are people who were famous throughout human history (this includes people who never really existed and heroes that don't exist yet). They all fight each other and the last team standing wins the Holy Grail (it's not the actual cup used by Jesus, it's just named after it) and they will get their wish granted.
The first game was Fate/Stay Night which was then followed by a novel named Fate/Zero, both of them being later adapted to anime format.
Fate/Grand Order is a free to play mobile game in the series that was just released in English on June 25th. So if you want to try the series, that may be a good place to start, since it won't cost you anything other than an internet connection and a phone that can run the game.
