Description
When: December 1, 2018
Where: Diergaarde Blijdorp Rotterdam, The Netherlands
I try not to feel too bad when people sidle up close to me to follow the line my camera is aimed at (or look at what's on my screen) and thus spot an animal they'd missed before. Because I followed the pointing fingers and exclamatations (and yes, even a description of where exactly the Bird was perched) to finally photograph this beauty First time seeing one, what a treat!
Species: Blue-Breasted Kingfisher (Teugelijsvogel)
Latin name: Halcyon Malimbica
Originates from Equatorial Africa.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…It is a tree Kingfisher, and in coloration can be considered the larger editon of the Woodland Kingfisher.
…Both sexes look similar, and the species as a whole is quite noise, making a “pu-pu-pu-pu-ku-ku-ku-ku” whistling sound.

Thanks
I was very surprised at how striking the colors are in real life (it was my first time seeing this bird).

As soon as I read the title, A Perfect Circle started playing in my head.

Ooh, I like it when my photo titles do that! Though they are always taken from a song, but I've noticed it can be different songs for different people

That's the point of interpretation!

Now that looks more like a kingfisher to me... unlike that grey bird way back with the plastic snake.

Haha, a photo of the front alwas looks very different from what you expect!
But yes, this one is more prominently evident a Kingfisher

Not gonna lie; I first thought this was a kookaburra.

Well, they are both Kingfishers
There's a different kind of large Kingfisher that's somewhere in between when it comes to size and coloring, of the Kookaburra and this one

I thought this too but it turns out that kookaburras are also tree kingfishers so really they'd be rather closely related!

There is nothing worse then some idiot in the photo you are trying to take a pic of. But they are not too noticeable, I wouldn't have known if you didn't mention it, but no matter the main focus is this beautiful bird, these guys are gorgeous

Oh, that's not what I meant - it's more the case when they're sidling up next to you to look at what's on the screen of your camera Luckily, I either get close or the animal is high so there's little chance of people actually getting in front of me
There are some instances where a kid is shoved or pushes its own way in front of me, but I can work with that
Thnaks

Oh I understand now, I would think it still annoying though. But
as long as you can work with it

It's annoying But when sometimes you find yourself doing the same (though keeping in mind personal space and that sort of thing) it's hard to really blame others
I guess it's part of zoo photography, but it's also at times led to some nice conversations.

Funny, for a bird from that area of Africa, he’s got some plumage! Either all those feathers keep him cool, or he’s sweltering during the hot months.
Either way, congrats on capturing this beauty.

That always makes me wonder too - but they see layers actually help to keep you cool, so who knows?
I think he just looks a bit puffy because it was winter and a bit dreary weather so he needed to say warm
