Where: Dierenpark Zie-ZOO Volkel, the Netherlands

Most people don't know their habitat is also part of the zoo - it's on the public road, a bit further from the entrance and parking lot, so most people don't bother.

We do, at times (especially when we know hibernation is over) and this time we were lucky they stayed above ground even after spotting us.

Species: Alpine Marmot (Alpenmarmot)

Latin name: Marmota Marmota Marmota

Originates from the Alps, Carpathians, Tatras and northern Apennines in Europe.

Current status: Least Concern

Did you know:

…Alpine Marmots are excellent diggers, being able to break soil even a pickaxe has trouble with.

…They spend up to 9 months every year in hibernation.

…Because of the colonization of the Alpina habitat, the Alpine Marmot has lost most of it’s genetic diversity. They are one of the least genetically diverse, wild-living animals.
