Description
When: September 2, 2018
Where: Zoo Antwerpen, Belgium
There's something truly riveting about the way these Vultures look I like the way their coloring can differ per individual, but that blue beak especially is truly astounding to see.
Species: Cinerous Vulture (Monniksgier)
Latin name: Aegypius Monachus
Originates from Eurasia.
Current status: Near Threatened
Did you know:
…The Cinereous Vulture is also called the Black (European) Vulture or the Monk Vulture.
…It’s genus name, Aegypius, is Greek for “vulture” or a bird not unlike one, being somewhere between a vulture and an eagle.
…In some countries, the Cinerous Vulture is called a variation of Monk Vulture, for its bald head and ruff of neck feathers like a monk’s cowl. It’s more common name though – Cinereous or Black – refers to it’s ashy to black plumage, although “Cinerous” was chosen to set it apart from the American Black Vulture.

Thank you! We were lucky to catch them in a benevolent mood, they were very willing to sit pretty for the camera
If only it were a baby It's an adult, but with vultures the nakedness remains which makes it hard to tell. I wonder what a Cinerous Vulture chick would look like though...

Hehe, I had to google it because it's not all that common to have a breeding pair of vultures in zoos around here.
They're really cute though!
