Description
When: March 20, 2018
Where: Zoo Veldhoven, The Netherlands
Steller's Sea Eagles are really big raptors, and the older they get, the bigger they grow (which is the way it works, of course). But the bigger, the sturdier, and less cute though more than impressive.
Now, juveniles though, are already large, but they have a sweeter look to their faces. It could be their coloring, that sets off those eyes so beautifully, but it's hard to say no to a sweet face like this, isn't it?
Species: Steller’s Sea Eagle (Stellers zeearend)
Latin name: Haliaeetus Pelagicus
Originates from coastal northeastern Asia.
Current status: Vulnerable
Did you know:
…On average, the Steller’s Sea Eagle is the heaviest Eagle in the world, though in some standard measurements, it may mete out below the Harpy Eagle and Philippine Eagle.
…They’re easily recognized by their dark-brown to black plumage with strongly contrasting white on the lesser and median upper-wing coverts, under-wing coverts, thighs, under-tail coverts and tail. The eyes, bill and feet are yellow. Juveniles, however, remain a uniformly dark coloring, with white showing up here and there. Their irises are brown, legs are whitish and blackish-brown beak till they reach their definite plumage and looks in the fifth year of life.
