Description
Photo taken in July, 2014 @ Zoo Osnabrück, GermanyWhen you look at this bathing Bear, you don't see much the matter with him. Appearances can be deceiving though, because this is no ordinary Bear.
If I remember correctly, the zoo thought it would be no problem to put the Brown Bear and Polar Bear together in an enclosure. As they didn't fight, it seemed perfect. Unfortunately, the Bears thought they were perfect, too - for each other.
And what do you know, a couple months later twins were born
Species: Polar Bear (IJsbeer)
Latin name: Ursus Maritimus
Originates from the Arctic Circle,
Current status: Vulnerable.
Did you know:
…The Polar Bear is only rivaled by the Kodiak Bear as the largest Bear in the family.
Species: Brown Bear (Bruine beer)
Latin name: Ursus Arctos
Originates from Eurasia and North America.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…The Brown Bear can be mistaken for the Grizzly Bear; however, the latter is a subspecies of the former.

Haha, it makes for a nice change and a good laugh It just really shows such a different view/idea from my original one, but it is so fitting I can't help but smile and agree

all of your bear shots are great. We have lots of bear in Canada. I spend my teen years in a Air-force Radar isolated posting on a montains ( my fathr was in the Air force), we frequently had bears coming in back yard. We ha all kinds off animals coming, cougars, fox, etc

I only get to see bears in zoos, unfortunately - but your youth sounds amazing! (except for the isolated part)
There are so many places I want to visit to possibly see all these animals in the wild, but then, in your back yard? Has to be kind of scary at times. But great for photo opportunities and experiences of a lifetime.
I suppose that when you live there long enough, and the same animals come by, you start to recognize them.

We lived in Mt Apica for 3 years. I was Lucky to live all over Canada because my father was in the Air-Force. He worked with the Artic rangers, he was Lucky to see live polar bear. I spends many years in British Colombia, over there we had Grizzely bear Kodiac, far more dangerous than black bear, black bear will leave you alone, as long as it not a mother and her cubs. I live in Québec city right now, we have occasional moose or black bear wondering in the city ( bear are more rare, moose and deer we see often. One of my friend was chased by a Young moose on a bike path. We have Racoons in our backyard, must lock our Garbage. Occasionally we see a Snowy owl, because I feed the wild birds and it attracts pigeons, ( with the Snowy owl we have less pigeon) Actually Québec city had an invasion of Snowy owl this winter, nice invasion. Canada is a nice country, for wild space.

The Grolar Bear! We actually learned about these in my Biology class over the summer. Apparently it raises an interesting debate about what defines a species, since grizzlies and polars can interbreed.

You really learned about the bears in this zoo?
Because I believe it wasn't a Grizzly-Polar, but a Brown-Polar but I'd have to look it up again
I've heard about Grizzlies or Polars crossing to get to a different piece of land and that indeed, hybrids have been found on several occasions in the wild. It's kind of weird, or better yet, unexpected, but nature works in mysterious ways

Well, I'm sure it would work with different brown bears, since grizzlies are only a subspecies. But yeah! We learned about them. I had never heard of that happening before.

I looked it up on the zoosite how there origin really works (luckily my German is rather okay)
On this photo it is probably the male of male and female twins born in 2004 to a European Brown Bear mother and a Male Polar Bear. The bears were kept together at that time, and even though there was a pair of male and female of both varieties, well, a hybrid was made . In 2005 the Polar bear duo moved to another German zoo.
Apparently the twins show marks and behavior of both species. The male twin has a darker fur colour than te female, though both have a pretty caramel like colour The head is apparently typical for Polar Bears, the ears are a middle form of the tiny ears of the polar bear, and bigger ear of the brown bear. The hybrids apparently also have the "shoulder hump" trademark to polar bears
Aside from that, the male shows real trademark polar bear behavior in its tendencies to swim and play
In German this hybrid is called an "breisbär" (a combination of braunbär and eisbär) so I'm not sure what an apt translation would be
The zoosite also names in the wild hybrids are formed of these species, but are not common. I would assume a hybrid with the grizzly would be more likely

Yeah, it would probably just depend where brown and polar bear ranges might overlap and how in the mood they were to mate!

You barely hear it, aside from some cats that produce the Savannah, and of course different dog races.

Great! I am sure I never saw one of these hybrids in a photo before! Interesting ... polar bears and brown bears are more closely related than it would seem by appearance and lifestyle.

I know, I thought the same thing
I read or saw something once, about Grizzlies being able to walk across the planes to meet up with Polar Bears, and that they've found hybrid Grizzly-Polars, but never with the brown ones
