Description Photo taken in August, 2016 @ Landgoed Hoenderdaell, The Netherlands

This pretty boy is Omar; he was born in a circus in Slovakia. He was bought as a cub by a man who thought it would be fun to own a cub. Until he had to flee to the country. leaving Omar behind in a too-small cage. The man's father tried to sell Omar, but failed. The Lion was starving while kept in the small enclosure without any cover from the cold. When animal activists saw that he was up for sale, they called in the help of the foundation aligned with the zoo.
Omar had lost nearly all of his manes and was close to emaciated when he arrived at the zoo in 2015. Since then, he's quickly regained his lost weight and his mane grew back. He's one of the most impressive males at the zoo: fit, young and handsome.
His brother Bruno from the same litter also found a home at the zoo. Formerly owned by a member of the mafia, he was left to his own devices after his owner died in prison. The man's wife did not know what to do with the big cat, and called in the help of the foundation. Though Bruno arrived in a better condition than his brother Omar, he can still show some stressed behavior.
Because they're young Lions, they have a future ahead of them in the semi-wild of Africa.

UPDATE: The brothers will move together to Africa this year

Omar was rather eager to get his turn in the hunting simulator, and din't waste any time. He was running, prowling and jumping. This shot was taken right before he jumps upward (something I had not anticipated - the next shot in the sequence shows just his legs at the top of the frame). He's frothing a little at the mouth but he did catch the meat in the end

Here are more photos of Bakari's pride in the hunting simulator:

We didin't really know how to handle the photography conditions inside, so you will notice some irregularities and hardships like the obvious moments in these photos.

Species: African Lion (Afrikaanse leeuw)

Latin name: Panthera Leo

Originates from Africa and West Asia.

Current status: Vulnerable

 Did you know:

…It is the second-largest living Cat, after the Tiger, but the tallest – at the shoulder – of all living cats.

…Lions are the only members of the Cat family to display obvious sexual dimorphism, meaning that males and females look distinctly different.

…Lions in captivity tend to be larger than Lions in the wild.

Really great shot! The wind in his mane is the best part!

I've never been to a circus (I think. I hope) and I'm glad. Poor lions. I'm glad they are in a nicer living space!
It's good he's doing a hunting simulator even though the males don't hunt much. It's good for their minds.

They have a really wonderful place to live in, and it's only going to improve once they're moved to Africa

For most of them it's a bit the challenge of working for their snack - they don't have to, but for some (especially the younger ones) it's a bit hard to resist not to go after it

Thank you

They have some of the most handsome male lions over there, but Omar is definitely one in a million. I suspect he'll grow even prettier with age, considering he's still rather young

Lions are superb creatures, nicely captured here too

Interesting backstory, it is unfortunate that people at times take on pets that are not made to live in captivity, but hopefully the futures of this guy and his brother will be brighter.

Thank you very much

It's always kind of weird to hear about people not just joking about wanting an exotic "pet", but actually getting or having one
Can you imagine having a lion in your back yard?

Omar and his brother Bruno will soon make their way to Africa and live in the semi-wild

I always wanted a Tiger tbh, but just feeding it would be a nightmare and yeah that is good to hear

He really -is- young and handsome.
And he looks quite dangerous, too. I wouldn't want to be in his eye as a potential target!

Thank you for sharing his story, too. I am glad to hear that both he and his brother found a good home and can now live more comfortably. I guess there is some goodness in the world!

He's one of the pretties lions I've ever seen - and to see him on  the prowl
It's not the sort of thing you see every day, and yup, definitely more than happy not to be anywhere near him to be considered a target

This place is really awesome, not just taking in abused, retired and kind of forgotten felines and offering them the kind of peaceful lives they deserve, but also giving the young ones a chance to experience the semi-wild in a pride

It really sounds like a great place. I think that's what a sanctuary is all about. Humans can be entirely too selfish when it comes to wild animals. We take them in and imagine they can be domesticated. We pride ourselves in keeping wild animals like pets. But these are wild animals, after all. And it's nice to see that someone out there respect that.

He really is a very handsome animal. Just imagine how he might have been out there in the real wild!

Of course
It was a great experience to watch these cats in action with the simulator, and hearing/reading about their live's stories make the animals that much more special
