Description
So a couple of people wanted to see a tut or wip of these current Zerg pieces, and Here we are!I think it's all pretty self-explanatory, I'm not using anything particularly fancy; only using a regular hard round brush pretty much all the time, at 100% opacity, with opacity + size set to pen pressure.
Enjoy! at each of these steps I made a new layer to work on, though I wouldn't normally use quite so many for the basic painting.
Photoshop CS3, linework from Sketchbook Pro. Working size was 2000px wide.

This is excellent! I'll have to draw from your method and try it out! After doing lots of cel shading lately, I've been itching to do some digi-paint.
I have one in the works, but I need to learn more. I'll have to do more experimenting.
Thanks for sharing this! !

Not really, no, just the straight pencil (I don't use it much for painting or anything so I don't find the need to).
Thanks

Dude, I did not expect that so soon... this is so great to see! Doesnt leave much questions to the viewer...
This is like water to the dry sponge in my head (some call it 'brain' :> ). It's definitely going to be ed and saved on my
(ya never know, tomorrow every DA-Server will be crushed by a tornado at once or something xD )...
Thank you very very much... although it seems like one of those things that look easy here in the making-of, but hard if you try on your own. I'll see...
A shame there is a nasty examination next week, so letting me distract by some painting sessions is probably the most fatal thing i can do now. But my fingers are itching already ^^

Hi sir, just wanna ask what tool in sketchbook pro did you use for the line art? I see you have different sizes there, there are thin and thick (main) lines.
I really love that kind of lineart but I can't make any.

Mr--Jack In reply to leaflent [2009-02-14 23:04:11 +0000 UTC]
Just the main pencil tool, can't remember at what size but roughly middling; not too thin, not too thick. The variation in lineweight all just comes from the pen pressure.

Ooh. So no any other tool? I was guessing you used ballpen tool since it makes a more solid line, yea but I was wrong.
Okay I might try it on pencil as well.
Thank you so much.
Very impressive gallery

Awesome progression; it's neat to see WIPs of stuff like this.
Might you consider doing another, but explaining each step either in the tutorial or description? I'm trying to dissect this particular style and there's like no decent tutorials on it anywhere. xD

Maybe, though I'm not really sure how much explaining I can do to make it much clearer...

Mostly just the overall technique; like how to use the brush to get that rough, but still clean look, or how you pick colors or pick which areas to detail most. Things like that.

Well the way I'm working on these does lend itself to being able to show the walkthroughs, so I might do one again.

always at 100% opacity? I spot some transparency here and there... not that I doubt your word of course -Its just that it doesn't sound as efficient to paint in that manner... and your stuff looks.. well, efficient.

Mr--Jack In reply to ukitakumuki [2009-02-13 22:32:27 +0000 UTC]
I should say that I've got opacity + size of the brush set to pen pressure, and I'll admit it might be a little exaggerating to say always 100% but for almost all of the actual painting yeah, it is; getting the atmospheric perspective and doing the background shadow is the only time I'd always turn it down to around 30%. To get smooth blends I've just got my finger permanently on the option key for efficient () colour-picking.

He's probably using 100% opacity, but also pen pressure.

Making quick selections of complicated areas (and being able to include different opacities of selection) that would be too difficult, time consuming or just impossible to do with the lasso or magic wand tools.

Great walkthrough, man; I really need to start using the quick select - such a powerful feature that I keep overlooking. I like how straight-forward your process is; not a whole lot of tricks or anything. (:

Tricks can be handy sometimes but it really depends on what sort of look you're aiming for; I enjoy painting like this, indeed.

Yeah, I enjoy getting down to business and painting stuff, as well. Sometimes I'll resort to extra tricks if I want metallic effects, but it's usually just a matter of the ol' brush work.

do you lave the linework layer on top right to the end? it seems like it.. though not all.. at which point do you start painting over the top ?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Mr--Jack In reply to crump3t [2009-02-12 12:44:07 +0000 UTC]
This is actually the only one where there's any painting over the linework, with the slime stuff, aside from that it's only ever the white BG that I paint over the top (at least in this style). And occasional touch-ups at the end.

crump3t In reply to Mr--Jack [2009-02-13 15:41:27 +0000 UTC]
right so you do leave the line layer on top always? do you put effort into making clean lines to start with then?

Mr--Jack In reply to crump3t [2009-02-13 22:27:26 +0000 UTC]
With these, yep; working with sketchbook pro I've found it's pretty easy to get relatively clean lines (process there is usually two layers, one rough and one final (s'ose I should've shown that, I'll remember it if I do another one), I've put them up in my sketchbook (page 5) if you want to take a look at them . . .
