In chess when a pawn reaches the other side of the board it can be turned into any other piece with the exception of the King of course. Most people would choose to turn it into another Queen hence the pawn becoming a Queen.

The pawn can only move forward, and because it's chess, you can't just "King" it. So once it reaches the end it's turned into a more powerful piece so it can move again (and as motivation for getting your pawns across).

Absolutely. It is an official rule. I'm not sure how long it has been a rule but I suspect it has been for a very long time.
It is completely understandable that you might not have known it because it doesn't come up much. It's pretty hard to get a pawn across the board without it being taken.
