Description Well it's a computer from Mass Effect 3 (you might recognise it from the loading screens) made completely from wood

Amendment: I have decided that in the summer time (as I am currently in university) that I shall attempt to make a fully working version of this computer that will function as nothing more than a little note book computer, nothing to heavy duty. Wish me luck..for summer

It's finding the time and the parts mostly the screen is an awful shape

agree. would be easier to do a fallout 3 computer though.

Oh definitely

Using laptop parts (and a little bit of ingenuity) this could actually exist.

You would need:

A custom shaped shell (with designs)

A custom shaped motherboard

A custom shaped LCD monitor (touch screen if you want).

Custom sound system

Oodles of screws.

A hard drive (this could be a Solid State [SSD] or the traditional magnetic. The SSD will be more expensive and will also have a shorter life, but it will be way faster than the regular HD)

At least 8 GB of Ram (4 is what is ok... but the computer will slow down after many updates.[quicker than with 8])

AMD or Intel processor (Intel would be preferred)

Power supply (mainly a Li battery)

A CD drive (or go the apple rout and make the user use a USB one)

A keyboard (or the more fancy laser keyboard)

A touchpad

A GPU .... Graphics card.

and a Network drive.

(for the OS... you can use Linux.)

All this would cost you roughly... as much ,if not more, as a high end gaming PC.

If you get me the materials I would put it together for you

You might want to take the other guy's advice as well. He seems to have way more knowledge on the specific parts required, and could probably give you a better estimate.

(it is best to go in with as much information as possible.)

Yeah, but a high end pc costs rather expensive. It's basically a laptop but just shaped a bit different, especially the keyboard and the monitor. Sorta like a summary of what you're saying. That may cost a bit, all the custom made parts.

But that's really cool of you to out line exactly what will be needed ^-^

Ronofarr In reply to ATFan2 [2014-01-14 23:17:24 +0000 UTC]

well... more of a general check list. As computers are pretty persnickety about what will work and what will not. If I stated a specific motherboard, I would also need to state a specific ram and processor. (I really didn't want to do that research as laptops are a little bit harder to make from scratch... much more effort and planning ya know?)

[also I forgot the cooling system. oops]

ATFan2 In reply to Ronofarr [2014-01-15 01:51:29 +0000 UTC]

True. And true. Though the amount of money spent for building your own laptop/ computer is expensive and everything has to be done right. Not all custom made pcs are rad

I prefer a nice tower than a laptop for my gaming man. Less hassle and easier to fix if something goes wonky. (like a faulty power supply, or even a stuttering hard drive.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ATFan2 In reply to Ronofarr [2014-01-16 23:11:32 +0000 UTC]

True. But a tower's not portable Could always carry the laptop around. But I get your point of view.
That's why it's good to have a custom built computer. Cheaper than building a laptop. If anything goes wrong just fix and done.

why not a raspberry pi?

plus you could always configure a linux distribution to show up only certain parts of the screen.

from there its just a custom case, and peripherals, cut up and stuck into the thing

and if not raspberry pi, on board graphics in a mini itx motherboard, with a compact psu

Ronofarr In reply to ObservedFIREFLY [2014-01-14 22:58:16 +0000 UTC]

So... if I am getting this correctly... you agreeeeeee~?

Yaaaay Linux!

Also with the weird angles the case would have, It would be better to have a motherboard that would complement the case... I wouldn't want to have any loose fitting parts ya know?

I was thinking that the hard drive would best fit into the (for a lack of a better description) pointed bits, where the other would be able to hold USB ports and or Ethernet connection/ wireless adapter. The middle would have plenty of room for the power and the motherboard n' such. The cooling system is the main problem I am having. (planning in my head that is) [you have any ideas?]

I think the Casing would be where the bill would skyrocket.

ObservedFIREFLY In reply to Ronofarr [2014-01-14 23:28:52 +0000 UTC]

3d printed casing, would be about 3 reels of A.B.S plastic (the stuff used in 360 controllers) which would come to 75 pounds, or 120 dollars, if you had the 3d model ripped from the game, you could create it for 75 pounds, youd need access to a 3d printer though.

as for the cooling system, you could use a specially configured loop water cooling system, shove the pump somewhere discrete, have a mini fan and radiator, and have a full motherboard cooling block,

the hdd could be 2.5 inch, or just an m.2 ssd, the maximus vi impact has a slot for those on the motherboard, which would eliminate the need for a hdd,

i/o could come out the back of the keyboard part, solving the whole usb/ethernet port space, have the psu next to that, and it can just be a whole set of rear io,

your motherboard concerns are the main problem, if you found a similar shaped laptop motherboard, the problem is solved, just use the laptops screen, touchpad and keyboard, leave out the battery and just use it as a desktop, a custom pcb is not only expensive but would be illegal because of the royalties different interfaces have to be paid off to use. the project would be too high profile.

oh wait a second, net book, why not use that motherboard? theres a even a motherboard on one of the clevo laptops that can handle an i7 quad core 8 thread cpu, and has an inbuilt 650m gpu

a netbook is probably the best start

Ronofarr In reply to ObservedFIREFLY [2014-01-14 23:49:49 +0000 UTC]

Actually your desktop idea... It is friggen' brilliant!

If you just hide the actual PC somewhere (that will still be accessible, and have good airflow) you can make the object in question the keyboard and screen! It would also be easier, cheaper, and would look (/run) better!

Though the printer would need to make the casing more solid though. That would call for a little bit (like half a spool) more plastic.

The keyboard could be placed in with a notch allowing for the USB cord to be hidden. (or you could use a wireless) The screen would have to be built in though.

I would think it would be more of a fun second monitor than a main, dew to the... interesting... shape of the screen (you could have it off to the side like in the game)

If you want to make it less apparent you made it out of wood sand it with 150grit reprime the surface (based on the type of wood filler you are using water or oil based) take wood grain filler and apply it over the surfaces to be painted in a circular motion so you get all the pores. then removed the excess filler before it hardens. re sand the surface then re prime it and re paint it. (practice on some scrap to get it right before you try this on your work piece)

when you have a product your happy with you may want to apply a clear coat to add shine and extra protection.

A lot of people have been mentioning that I should use some kind of wood filler and fine sand paper, thanks for the tip XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Myrenous In reply to Mralig112 [2014-01-16 15:51:49 +0000 UTC]

It takes a bit of practice for the first few times but once you fill in all the wood pores and re prime the surface your works will look a lot more authentic and depending on your equipment and skill with various types of paint / finishes you can pull off a bunch of "material" looks. When you re prime the surface .. if you see any areas that look like you missed a lot sand that area again and repeat the process. you don't want to have to try to cover up smaller amounts of wood grain with paint .. especially if you are spraying it on it will take to many coats.
