When the grad student had signed up for the long-term isolation study sponsored by the space agency, she had thought that it would be a small-team experience, a simulation of a cramped spacecraft on a lengthy voyage or an emulation of a Martian or lunar colony.

She was very wrong.

By her count, the 17th feeding cycle since she'd awoken in this sensory deprivation hell from the sedatives they'd tricked her into taking had just started. The thick rubber prong crammed into her mouth began to pulse out warm jets of sticky nutrient goo that she was forced to swallow. She'd have to gargle down a quart or two of the foul-tasting slime, and then the evacuation process would begin. She'd never before in her life been administered an enema, but now the process was becoming routine, but no less horrid for all that.

Had she been ensconced in this bio-support array for 17 days? Six? Twenty? She had no way of knowing.

Her only comfort, slim as it was, was that she'd signed up for a six-month experiment.

It was probably better for her at this time to not realize that the fine print allowed the agency, at its sole discretion, to extend her volunteer service to 24 months...
