Description Been working extremely long hours lately - close to double time, actually.  And so in the meantime I answered a fan request and drew the Ranger 6x6 light armored vehicle from my comic 6-Commando as filler.  These little cards have been remarkably popular and when I can;t get a full page done, I like to try to get one of these in, just to add a little insight into the comic's background and storyline.

Aw, shoot... I'm ramblin' again.  Ketch ya later on down the trail.

Hmm APC equivalents?

Mobile infantry battlesuits have reduced the need for APCs to a large extent.

And I guess it might be hard to fit power in a tight space like an APC huh?

They can get about four of them in there in their full armor. Scout suits are smaller though.

I love your designs, but i wish they were of a higher resolution. it's a real pain to read them

Thanks! I'd like to post them higher resolution but I have to hold my cards a little close at the moment since I eventually plan to print a 6-Commando Technical Manual, and this will all be in it!

Those Free French look sharp with their kepis and maroon camo. What are their rifles? What sort of resources would an unarmoured infantry (If such things are prevalent) have against armoured inf and vehicular armour? Shaped-charge grenades or something like the Raytheon pike missile?

Thanks!  I like their look in this one a lot!

The Free French infantry here carry FAMAS-C2 caseless rifles with binary liquid-injection propellants that are good for antipersonnel work. The small arms the "light" infantry carry wouldn't do much against armored or "heavy" infantry, but the rifles carry a secondary under-barrel HERA projectile (high-explosive rocket-assist) that can defeat powered armor at relatively close range.  The Chasseurs were mostly engaged in civil defense in the - the Free French had their own heavy infantry assets to engage enemy powered armor.

Nice design. very well made but I do agree with AriochIV  in that the turret need to be higher (which unfortunately makes it a bigger target) so it can depress it's gun lower to combat enemy troops that are close and are also close to the vehicle, but anyway, great job it looks great!

A very nice bit of work

It seems that the position of the top turret so far back on the hull, and in a low "dip" in the hull behind a high point on the front of the hull, means that it has very limited field of fire forward. In the side view, it appears that the main cannon cannot decline at all below the horizontal without risk of hitting the forward hull. It seems like it would be unable to engage any low target (infantry or a very low MBT) directly forward for a distance of perhaps half a mile or so.

Yikes.  A valid critique!  I guess that's why I don't work for General Dynamics!

I estimate it could depress about five degrees, so its low-blind spot would be about 125 feet straight ahead, which is not a half mile but still significant.  In such a situation the driver would have to turn to broadside the enemy so the gun could depress to either side of the vehicle.  Good thing it's quick.  And maneuverable.

Actually, looking more closely, it looks like it's closer to three degrees. Interestingly, this seems to be something the Soviet struggled with throughout the Cold War - vide the generally poor gun depression on the PT-76, the BMP series, etc. So this would make the Ranger slightly uncharacteristic for the UNA, but not without precedent in terms of real world vehicle design, especially if the Ranger were meant as mainly an offensive, combined arms weapon, or a weaponized APC. Using it in the open against a heavily armed low target would be bad, though - keep the Taiga armored cars on hand, for sure!

I might want to retrofit that turret though.

Still, I haven't really endeavored to make my designs flawless, and who knows but that this might make for interesting plot twists at some point.  Hmm...

All that's needed to fix it is to make the turret a bit higher. Having to turn broadside to fire and thus present your weaker side armor to the enemy doesn't seem like a good strategy.

Well, well, well... pretty good design there.

So, what's next? The BTR with the coilgun on top?
