Hey all!
I gave my watchers the chance to win the power to dictate what my next journal was going to be. death-tribble won and wanted an article addressing how CVs select DDs, either serious or humorous. I decided to go the humorous route
Mrs-Durden
I basically select Daily Deviations based on the photographer who has the best equipment. Obviously, it's impossible to take a good photograph without thousands of euros worth of material. If you don't have state of the art camera equipment, there's no chance I'm ever going to give you a DD, sorry!
Queen-Kitty
I make sure to DD the same 10 or so people all of the time, new people are just not interesting to me. Plus usually the artists I feature are already popular, so I KNOW they're good!
AngeKrystaleen
1 - The first thing that I'm looking for a DD is big boobies. You know, a manga/anime girl without huge breasts is not a real manga girl.
2 - I feature only DDs with tentacles because JAPAAAAAN.
EveryNextDream
I have no actual selection process. I just browse by most recently uploaded photos then close my eyes and point at the screen. Decision made!
copperrein
I thought I was adding to my Christmas wishlist? What do you mean DD?
Ellysiumn FILTERS again!!? NO! this deviant will never receive a DD from me with these filters!!
Gallery full of screenshots! next gallery then!
Thiefoworld
1. I make sure the deviant is elegible to get one to begin with, no previous DD in the last 6 months, is still active, etc.
2. I proceed to check the deviation itself, the technical aspects, the impact value and so on.
3. I check if the deviation doesn't break any rules
4. I think, and think, and think, and think about it for a long time, until I decide I won't feature it.
5. Select something else in 5 mins. because is more cute and sparkly.
TheGalleryOfEve
My process for selecting DDs is very specific. I love to reward people who are nice to me!!! I used to give out cake badges, but now that I’m a CV, I give DDs to all my friends on their birthdays!!! I love to see how happy they get, it makes me feel so good about myself!!! But well, I also give DDs to people who aren’t friends with me, but only under one condition: they HAVE to watch me, otherwise they won’t get a DD from me at all. And I only feature artists who use at LEAST 5 emoticons in each one of their comments. Anything lower than that, and they’re out.
Sometimes I also get DD suggestions via notes, but the same thing applies to the suggesters, if I’m not on their watch list, then I will delete their note. But if they’re already watching me, they still have to prove to me how badly they want me to DD the piece they’re suggesting. How? Simple. They have to include in the DD suggestion note the Nutella emoticon. Yes, whoever watches me, KNOWS how much I love Nutella, so if they don’t include that specific emote in the note, I’ll know that they’re not ‘active’ watchers, so I won’t ignore them, but I’ll take forever to DD their suggestion.
And well, needless to say that I will prioritize those artists (and DD suggesters) who give me praise. The more they praise me (preferably on my front page, in the forums and during chat events), the more chances they have to catch my attention, therefore resulting in a DD.
I can't DD it if it has Biggie Smalls (aka: 1 big eye/1 little eye)
TokyoMoonlight
pinkythepink
Before I DD anything I make sure that the user has at least one mention of a lobster in their comment history.
JustACapharnaum
Everyone knows that the only reason why I don't set DDs on a more regular basis is because all photos are never good enough for me and that I am beyond elitist.... And also, I only DD people who have zodiac signs that I like. Otherwise, they're out.
Now if you want an actual serious look at how I personally select DDs....you can check out this journal: My (new) DD Guidelines - Let's talk...

It's bound to be something like this. Otherwise some truly horrible DDs would have been there (and we know those are only submitted on days with 3 in them, because evil).
Seriously, grateful thanks to the CVs for finding and popularising some truly beautiful work.

Good read! I knew it went something like this, but to see it spelled out gives it clarity.

You know, I almost believed the first part until I read "thousands" instead of "hundreds" of euros. I mean, you aren't realistically going to get a worthwhile camera for under €100, so that almost seemed self-evident. I almost expected the next entry to be KovoWolf with Well, I only select people who own a computer...
Then I laughed until my fuzzy rump fell off.
Would have loved to see cosmicbound , PixlPhantasy and Moonbeam13 on the list, though.

In the end I could care less about equipment I DD photos taken from phones pretty regularly. People just get this false notion in the photog community on DA that everyone is expected to have top notch equipment to be popular.
Sadly I couldnt get a quote from everyone this is really just something I put together in a jiffy

Well, good luck getting a decent phone for under €200 -.o
Still, a shame that misconception exists, though. It isn't limited to the photo community either. I mean, I paint in GIMP which is free to use, and my workstation was literally found in a dumpster... but that is another story.

I've seen plenty of good photos taken with equipment that's virtually worth nothing
Hahaha yeah very true, overall it's expected in all art communities that you gotta spend a bunch to get good results, which just makes me shake my head in the end

Indeed. Of course, one should expect to make an investment - but it is way lower than many seem to think.
In my first year at university - a year or so after Atlantis sank - I went to a guest lecture hosted by Michael Stenmark, a children's game show designer, on the economics of starting a franchise. He spoke warmly of comics, since in his words comics are a publishable visual medium where "blowing up the Death Star costs absolutely nothing".
Come to think of it, if custom boxes get reincorporated in Eclipse maybe I should put that quote in bold somewhere on my profile. A lot of people who do not themselves paint have asked if digital painting isn't very expensive; they always get surprised to hear I have only spent around €200 on digital art since 2009.

I totally get the deviations not submitted on a certain date. I mean where would we be without Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Superstitions ?
But when I read Mrs-Durden's comment it took me a moment to register the fact that when she said best equipment she meant camera equipment........
