Dear all,
Welcome to a new journal series I am very excited about. I had this idea where I wanted to do a series that showcases the immense diversity of people we have as members here on DeviantArt. And I wanted to try something a little bit different with regards to interviews. Instead of interviewing multiple artists by asking them a series of in depth questions, I decided I would come up with just one question, and ask it to a large number of deviants from different artistic mediums, different backgrounds, different countries, etc. This way, you, the reader, get to discover the insights, opinions and experiences of a huge variety of fellow members all at once. I really hope you guys will enjoy this, please let me know if there are specific questions you'd like me to ask in future issues!
"What is a style or genre of art you always wished you could do, but just never got into, or was never able to learn? And what do you find attractive about this genre of art?"

"I've always wanted to be able to illustrate people, either as profiles, portraits or abstractions. (artwork like the gorgeous work by Kuvshinov-Ilya would be a great example) A lot of the artwork I work on focuses on hard surfaces, machines, and objects of unbelievable power, and there's a lot yet that I'd like to learn and master which is why I haven't dabbled in character illustrations as of yet.
However, there's always a part of me that knows that there is a human element that's missing.
I almost try to compensate with photography, as I love portrait and candid photography, but I would love to collaborate with other artists one day in the genre I most love to produce artwork within."

"Sculpture. Modelling or like stone sculpture. What attracts me it's that it's the ultimate tangible experience in art. I never got into it because it's sort of a daunting endeavor. Requires a special place to work at, i never had. It's art that can be seen from afar, up close. It makes you want to touch it. Your perception of it changes drastically according to the environment. I might get into modelling in the future. It's one of two things i haven't dipped my foot into (the other being dancing). I've played in bands, i've painted, drawn, made graphic projects, i'm training to do tattoos... So that's it. If one day i have the energy for it, stone carving/sculpting would be a dream come true.

"Manga art style. I've always admired the thin and insanely detailed line work that goes into a single piece. The colors are never flat, but also don't rely heavily on intense shading, texture, etc. It really boils down to the artist being able to illustration every single line with the correct position and weight, as well as balance colors to perfection."
kaons
"I've always been amazed by artists who can put together a clean and cohesive cartoon or comic strip of their original characters and stories. Being able to draw the same person in multiple poses while retaining all the features that make them who they are is a skill I've never mastered even though I've tried! Also, driving a narrative through limited frames and small text bubbles takes considerable storytelling ability; it's like if you had to sum up a movie in only 20 or 30 screenshots. As an avid reader and lover of art, I am drawn to comics because it's a great union of the two types of media. Plus, adding in original characters and getting to peek into your favorite artist’s minds is a big plus. I feel like I am standing there with the character and experiencing what they are going through. It’s a truly powerful medium and one that I aspire to learn one day!"

For me personally I would have loved to know how to draw or paint. I find there are really outstanding artists on DeviantArt who know howto give life to their creations with some simple touches. Unfortunately, I never learned and I don't think I am gifted enough to do it, so I settled on photography.

"I have always wanted to get into traditional art. I never had a real interest in it until I felt like it was too late. I should have taken advantage of the art classes in high school and college. I find the originality of traditional art completely amazing and gorgeous but something I feel I cannot achieve. I have relied to heavily on Ctrl Alt Delete and when I sit down to try and draw traditionally I get frustrated and overwhelmed and just give up."

"I've always wanted to know how to paint well. Ever since I was a kid, I would paint for arts & crafts time at school or when I was home. It brought me joy, and as I've aged, it relieves my stress. I admire how a painter can evoke such immediate emotion from someone by their brush strokes, techniques, color usage, etc. Plus, I always wished that my hobbies would align with my skill sets, but painting isn't that for me. One day, I hope to learn about painting and practice techniques."

"I wish I could learn how to draw and paint. Originally inspired to pursue the creative arts through photography as a way to capture existing beauty, I also enjoy experimenting with digital effects in the hope of communicating a more unique perspective. Examples include photos of mine manipulated with abstract acrylic paintings I commissioned from LaraMuk . Photomanipulated images I would love to illustrate on paper or canvas as an extra degree of separation from capturing existing beauty recorded by the camera, even my digital experiments deviating from photo reality that can be printed ad infinitum by machines basically producing the same technical results over & over again. In this digital age where technology is taken for granted, I feel traditional art leaves a more unique imprint to stand the test of times in appealing to a sense of individuality that should be embraced versus a collective social media mentality. One of these days I hope to draw or paint for myself, meanwhile I am grateful for all those incredibly gifted traditional artists continuing to provide us with a bottomless well of inspiration.

"It's been several decades I'm interested in architecture. Churches and monuments, Paris cityscapes and all the ancient buildings the Old Continent can offer for the pleasure of the eye. It would have been great for me to draw perspectives, projections, elevations, from the overall sight to the shadows and details, trying to figure out how buildings and monuments interact with the whole landscape and to touch the creativity of the architects and the skill of the masons & sculptors.
My family is very skilled in art. My father could draw anything, from boats to fashion and my mother is an excellent painter. But due to a hand-eye synchronicity problem (a kind of dyslexia), I can't draw nor paint..."
NoxxPlush
"I've always wished I had gotten practice in fantasy landscape painting. It's one thing to illustrate a character, but another thing to bring an entire world to life with your imagery. When you see a fantasy landscape that just transports you into the world, it takes your breath away and makes you wish you could see these places for yourself. I really admire the skill and talent of people who can do that."

"I wish I was better with music. I really enjoy listening to music and playing it myself, too. I play the e-guitar. Or more - I used to play. I played quite fine I guess, but it was never stunning or anything. I never played in a band and I don't think I'd ever be good enough. The problem just is, that most of my time is spent on art. And when I have time, I lack the motivation. I really adore musicians who play the guitar awesomely - since I'm a metal-head I have many to adore! But also people playing other instruments, I've wanted to learn so many different ones, but I never took lessons. No time. What I love about making music is, that it easily decides over your mood and the whole atmosphere you're in, depending on what you play or listen to. Visual Art can hardly do that these days."

"I've always wanted to paint, with oil or watercolours. But i've always lacked the patience to learn properly how to do it. And now I haven't even tried for years, I am full of envy towards people who know how to do that. And I would love to do anything, from classical art to the abstract, with painting there's so much you can paint and emotions to express. And of course there's the secret hope that I could create a new art movement. With photographs and Photoshop one is still restricted to what you have shot, what is physically in front of your camera. Back in the old times I even learned how to draw and paint with my left hand (I am a right handed) because I felt that it worked better when I used a hand that I couldn't control properly."

"I was an IT Graduated with a software engineering degree. Although I never learned any art and design related stuff in college, but drawing and painting had been my hobby since young. (although I am red green color blind). After graduating, I went on to experiment and self taught different form of arts from vector cartoon style, pixel game art to realistic 3d rendering. I am enjoying all of them without major obstacles through my journey. But there is one form of art which I never get into, which is music. Music plays an important role in all games/animation/film project as it can easily convey the mood or emotion to audience/gamer. I try downloading LMMS (open source music sequencer/compositing) software and play with it. But I guess I have no talent and still a long way to go before I can come up with some music for my project. "

"It seems to me that anyone can create anything, so no particular style feels out of reach. But one medium, for which I'd love to instantly jump to expert level, is scripting. While it's primarily used to structure software, the way scripting can simulate unique, dynamic and beautiful effects for movies and video-games I'd say earns it the title of "art". Things like Rapunzel's hair in Tangled, time manipulation in Quantum Break, the wraith world in Lord of the Rings and basically everything in Media Molecule's game "Dreams" - they're all such unnatural effects but appear so natural because of their foundation in coding. I generally use all my 2D tools and skills to try and convince the viewer they're looking at something real. But with programming's ultimately organic yet precisely guided format, I could essential create truly real things that simply exist in a digital reality."
Now it's time for you to answer my question in the comment section below!

I've always wanted to go into digital art, many I see look so beautiful, but I don't think I'm good enough. When I tried digital art, I rarely was satisfied with the end result, and the process of doing it had caused me such overwhelming stress, that it left me crying. I don't think I'm good enough, and now I'm trying photography.

Definitely paper-cutting - I believe that it requires proficiency in both drawing and crafting, so I'm super impressed by people who can create paper cuts. One of my dreams as an artist is to become as skilled as SinistrosePhosphate .
I'm seriously considering getting into the craft, not only because I love the medium, but also because jewelry supplies are expensive - with paper-cutting, I would not have to worry about that. The only block I have is my fear of drawing - I have no trouble translating 2D to 3D, the other way around is a whole different story!

Superb work putting this together, Nina! The variety of artists, overall layout and highlighted key-words brings it all to another level. Naturally it was really fascinating to read each artists' unique reply and having some featured images for context was great.
I really like this new idea of yours and am flattered to be part of the very first one. I'm sure you'll do brilliantly with those to come!

I love "serigrafia" (screen printing I think it was called in english) given how elaborate & vivid many of the pieces tend to be.

I wish I could do digital art. I LOVE they way it looks, the smooth colors, the versatility of anything and everything from realistic to cartoon. I'm awed by how it isn't limited to physical supplies and how you can make any color you can think of, use any brush/pen/marker/pencil/chalk/oil-pastel/crayon/smudge-tool/watercolor, the way you can re-position/edit without ruining your picture, how you wont mess up because your hand accidentally brushed your art, I LOVE IT but can't wrap my head around it. My art has always been traditional art, I love the feeling of a pencil in my hand, the act of blowing off eraser shavings, the smell of an overheated eraser from rubbing furiously in anger at a mistake, the feel of paint covering parts of my hand and somehow my face, the act of washing out a paintbrush and the feel of gently rubbing the bristles apart to get that last stubborn bit of gooey paint out, the smell of oil pastels and the feel of clay, its all so satisfying. What little digital art I do actually create is done on Powerpoint (it shocks people sometimes when they realize Powerpoint is actually a pretty viable tool to do basic digital art, including crude GIFs) although crude its fun but the 70-80 or more movable shapes (a recollection of a time I tried to make Ironman's torso on Powerpoint) that layer together can get jumbled and confusing after a while. If I were to sit down with someone who knows how to do it I MIGHT be able to use it but never at the skill I so wish I could.

Id love to be able to draw the hyper realistic but ‘anime’ referenced drawings that are featured on games like league of legends as the splash art. It’s not the splash id like to be able to do but the drawing/painting itself.
I’m currently trying so hard to learn realism more and more but I always draw huge eyes on my humans as I’ve always been a cartoon illustrator (I guess?) so at the moment I’m focusing on improving my cartoons before I venture further into realism...

I would want to be able to draw because through it you can express yourself in so many different ways. You can use shading, textures and colour choices to Give each piece it's own mood and feeling. I would love to be able to do this, to be able to express myself in something other than words.

Thank you so much for the opportunity again! It was so much fun to think about your question. There are always so many types of art I always wish I knew, but painting is on the top of the list.
I loved reading everyone's individual stories as well. It's so fascinating how this bunch mostly chose painting. You have a wonderful series on your hands.

I just love this, I think I almost cried a little in times...
For the question, I could say oil painting for the price, inking and lettering for their beautiful lines, but I won't because I haven't give up that dream yet!
So maybe my biggest one would be music, like the piano and violin, and specially singing. It's such an wide range of emotions and sooo human, i will keep on trying my dreams, no matter if I don't have "talent" for it.
After all, those who don't persist, don't win Lets all do our best in our crafts and in learning new ones.

I have always wanted to be able to paint and draw, landscapes and nature generally. Traditional or digital. I have these wonderful pictures in my head but something gets lost between there and my hand and it just never comes out the same Working off a reference it's the same - need to learn the techniques of blending, shading, perception etc but after 50 odd years of wanting, now, when sooo much is available through the internet - I don't have the patience so my outlet has become some basic photography, fractals and landscape renders with Terragen - don't ask me where I find the patience for that or fractals - often I haven't and I scrap it and start all over - much cheaper with digital stuff!!

Haha I was gonna say fractals seem like they'd take a lot of patience!

They do! I just have to be willing to accept what renders rather than what I expected more often than not

I would have loved to learn to do glass work. I've always loved the look of glass. While I did a lot of work making jewelry, I never had the opportunity to venture into glass. I have always been impressed by cut crystal, lamp work, blown glass, dichoric glass, and enamels and plique-à-jour, and I would love to learn all these different techniques.

Great Idea
I wish I could photograph, My hands is too shaky, a stative would help, but it is also very limiting. Secondly I don't posses an eye for motive through a lens, people are like why are you photographing this?

I gave up on serious after photographing a tree literally living on the egde of a white cliff(sadly I lost the orginal). It is not the easiest job in the the world to photograph in front of gigant light suface that works as reflector in full sunlight, going almost backover for geting the right perspective, so it wasn't overlighted and it would look like it was growing normally with a cheap compact digital camera. But the humulating part was been told it was bad motif by teenage bloggers with Canon SLR cameras, that they only photograph on automatic and it would automatic be better with Canon. I still photograph with cheap cameras aka a smartphone, becuse that is I have with hand.

Great concept
My questions (yes, plural ):
how much time, effort the artist put in the social media (editing, talking to followers...)
which free apps (pc, smart phone) are the best for editing (photo, video)
what social media is the best for artists...to show your own art and to find other beautiful art
why did they choose to work with a specific art media (watercolor, oil, photography etc.) ...what do you like about it
how do they organize art time, how much time does it usually take for them to create an item

I would have loved to be able to do the western illustration/cartoon style (i.e. Disney). I've always loved it, and still do, but I never quite managed to pull it off, because somehow I always ended up back at full on realism. Eventually I just gave up. I really enjoy the range that comes with that style, be that range of work that can be done, or range of character traits that can be expressed through subtly exaggerated facial features/figures.

Interesting! It seems to be a common thing, artists used to realism having a hard time with more cartoonish styles, and vice versa. Makes sense. I don't think I'd ever be able to pull off a cartoon style (not that I'm a traditional artist to begin with...) but realism came easier to me when I actually did draw back in the day...

Wow, what a great project, Mrs-Durden ! This turned out amazing! Awesome concept!
I'd love to be able to draw in the semi-realistic style, but I can't quite grasp it! I usually take photos, or draw in the manga/anime style.

Thank you! And thanks for sharing that! The manga/anime style has always been intriguing to me because I don't think I'd ever be able to pull off drawing that way, could only ever do "realistic" stuff, though I by no means was ever any good

I see a lot of people write that they wish they were good at drawing and painting. I think a lot of people can be very good at painting without knowing it because they are not good at drawing. I would suggest tracing pictures and then colouring them. I had a friend who was not good at drawing but was really good at painting miniature figurines

I think this turned out great.
As for your question my answer would have to be painting. I have taken enough classes I have tried a lot of different things but of them the one I like most but never really learned how to do right or could manage to do right and wanted to was painting. I guess more watercolor than oil or acrylic but oil is also interesting, I am shit with brush strokes and using the right amount of well everything to make anything look decent but I never hated actually painting when I needed to for a class or just trying for the sake of it. I enjoy well done watercolor paintings and watercolors used in mixed media stuff and look it can create.

Honestly I think painting is fun even if you don't end up with something amazing, there's something like cathartic about it. Watercolors are dope, I never really tried them though, always acrylic or oils

It usually is fun. Acrylic I would always make me rush though because of how it dries. Watercolor I just enjoyed more especially later on when I would start to find pieces on DA or this one online comic I have a few posters of his horror themed comics that he painted in watercolors.

Good points raised there. Even my messes are fun A reason I love using Artrage is I still get the feel of painting, and can do tracing with it as well, and just enjoy doing it. They have rarely made it to submission though!

This is a great idea! Cheers!
I always wanted to learn Oil painting but with the financial issues I have I never got a chance to buy necessary art supplies, let alone paying for an art course. I love looking at masterworks of Leonardo da vinci, Vincent van gogh, Rembrandt and Bouguereau time to time, for inspiration and motivation. What I really like about oil paintings are the colors, texture and the natural feel, which I think really hard to match in digital medium. Above all, I love the multi sensory experience of enjoying an oil painting, which you can't get in digital medium. However, till I can get there, I do what I can via digital medium.
