Description
i saw you in front of a coffeeshop at the corner of washington
and 4th. you were drinking grape
juice. i told you that your eyes
were deep as water.
[two weeks passed]
you were getting on the subway
as i got off. i passed you and you
reached out your hand, touched
my cheek, and traced the scar
running partner to my nose,
memoir of a softball game.
[two weeks passed]
i stopped you in the street and
asked if you had been to rome.
you said no, but that you had
seen my rubber rainboots in a
dream, and that that would do
for now.
[two weeks passed]
i saw you across an intersection,
and a river of busy metal kept
us apart, but we toasted our
drinks across asphalt and i drank
to you. i wondered who you
drank to.
[two weeks passed]
we rushed for the same taxi. you
let me have it and asked if i was
busy. as i pulled away i yelled
back that i had a hot date with
corporate machine and materialistic
america. a hooker on the corner
laughed until she coughed, and
i think you smiled.
[two weeks passed]
you were washing your coats
at a laundromat. i stripped off
my socks, a fresh pair, and tossed
them into the metal gums of a
washer. i sat beside you. you told
me that as a child, you were scared
of kangaroos, that you wanted to
go hang gliding, that you felt as
though the world could fit in your
pocket and that i smelled like oranges
and ancient air and that i was
Something Else. we kissed. my
socks came out warm.
Two weeks have passed and I haven’t seen you.
Somehow, I know I won’t.
We never really said anything to each other,
But we found time in between moments to say everything.
I think that is enough.
I think I’ll be all right.

I read Immigrants Guide to Colorado when it was a DD, and through random clicking I found this. After I read this I read all of your deviations.
Your styles remind me of summer. Everything you write. It’s beautiful.
And for the record, Leaving Ian is printed out on my desk. Reading it makes me dizzy so the third time through I had to move to my bed. You said you weren’t sure about the ending. Be sure about it.

Someday, I will have a conversation like that with a complete stranger. I people watch, not the creepy kind, because I think it's interesting that everyone out there has their own story, and I want to know what that story is. Don't know why, just do.

I think we should all be compelled to learn the stories of others. When you have that random conversation with a complete stranger, you'll let me know, right?

i've definitely wanted to just pick someone at random on the street and talk to them
i think you've sort of captured that wierd-taboo-fringe desire really well...
great read

I don't know how to describe your piece...it's definitely not in your usual style, and it has a strange poignancy. I liked it very much.

Thank you ever so much, my dear history buddy. Vacation was splendid. Know why? Cause I didn't catch yellow fever!
How goes your summer?

It goes well, but quickly. Itziar leaves tomorrow
It seems the best summer also is the shortest, we go back in a little over one week.
But I am glad to hear you are yellow fever free and I'll see you at camp

That was amazing as usual. Something different than normal but I think that you did a great job with it. It was so intimate and beautiful. I love it! Great job. Oh and to answer your question, yes I really want to talk to some stranger about everything and nothing. It may be one of the most interesting experiences.

I think it is good that you got into experimenting, this one is good. It captures well the subconscious indifference that lies in such relations, but also this kind of interest, the short moments, when a desire to know more breaks through. (I think 'relation' is a word too strong for this kind of contact, though)
But it also gives me the impression of the superficiality that stands as a sort of barrier between them and their acquaintances, when they discover that they like the others more or on another, deeper, more interested way than they do like them.
And yes, I often feel this desire to speak to strangers (well, not to those that feel the wish to make me their closest friend due to alcohol, though). Here in Germany there was some years ago a section in a quite popular weekly journal which was named 'Wahlbekanntschaften'. A joung journalist chose people in public places at random and talked to them, asked them about their lifes and their ambitions, their worries and their joy.
I liked this very much, but the paper decided to replace it with a rather boring rubric.

Thank you so much for the compliments! I very much appreciate it.
That section sounds absolutley fascinating. It's such a shame that they took it out! So are you fluent in both German and English, then?

You're so welcome, I enjoy reading your work so much.
Well, German is my native language - I deeply hope that I speak it fluently. (But I wouldn't say I'm fluent in English, though.)
Yes, this paper is getting worse. But perhaps one could make something like photojournalism concerning this topic here on dA - speaking with strangers and taking a photo of the location the dialogue was held, but not of the person theirselves.
