Description As a young High Elf living in the galaxy in the post-legion war period, Mei-Ling had dreamed of helping others, and found that she had an aptitude for putting clues together and finding things that were out of the notice of normal folk.  However, as a daughter of a Golden Alliance High Command representative, her life had been decided for her.  Like many of the High Elven nobles in her lineage, she would be married off to whoever helped her father look best.  This did little to deter her, however, and upon learning that many of the common elven women had been disappearing off the streets, she would do whatever she could to find out who was behind it and put a stop to them.  Mei-Ling's primary instruction was in a form of martial arts that was mostly for demonstration, practically dancing rather than fighting, but she was still rather skilled, graceful, and agile and considered herself capable of handling whatever threats came her way.  Still, for a degree of added protection, she took one of her father's ceremonial laser pistols.  Dressing as plainly as she could manage, Mei-Ling wandered out into the seedier streets of her hometown, and just as she had nearly gotten herself lost, she stumbled upon exactly what she was looking for, though not in the manner she expected.  Watching from across the street, she saw a pair of thuggish elves kidnapping a common elf girl, and without a moment's hesitation, she lunged at the attackers, using her fighting skills to dispatch of the two abductors.  While she had expected there to be more of them, what she wasn't expecting was for their leader to be a powerful wizard, as magic users on her planet were all registered and checked regularly for criminal behavior.  She would have defeated the old spellcaster handily were she able to close the distance, but a single spellcast and Mei-Ling was left unable to move, paralyzed by a powerful body-element spell.  The wizard and his cronies took Mei-Ling and the other girl to their hideout.
Though Mei-Ling was unable to move, she could still see and hear, and what she learned shocked her.  Using her deductive skills, she pieced together that the abducted high elves were being transformed into Dark Elves by the wizard, who then used powerful mind magic to rewrite their memories before selling them off as slaves with particularly high generational numbers(Dark Elves in this time had numerical suffixes after their names that denoted how many generations their ancestors had sold them into servitude for).  More importantly, she found out that this was not only happening under the watch of the nobles, but that they had been paid off to allow it to happen.  Through sheer willpower, Mei-Ling was able to overcome the spell that kept her in place, but with the wizard and his henchmen keeping a close watch on her, the henchmen now armed with laser rifles, she decided that this time she would exercise her discretion and not let on that she could move.  Waiting for an opportunity and with guns trained on her and the other victim, she had little choice but to watch as the other kidnapped girl was transformed into a Dark Elf, with a new face, new hair, and a new body shape that left her completely unrecognizable from her old self.  Mei-Ling kept herself perfectly still as the process was repeated on her, the wizard chuckling to himself as he made her body stronger and tougher, saying that she would likely make someone a loyal bodyguard.
With the first phase of "reconditioning" finished and satisfied that the two girls were still unable to move, the wizard shooed his cronies out of the room, convinced that residual magical energy from the mind magic had been making them dumber and not wanting to render them completely unable to assist him.  As the caster began his spell on the other girl, Mei-Ling broke free of the simple zip-tie they'd bound her to a chair with and leapt at the wizard.  She was able to interrupt his spell before it had completed, but was not able to knock him out before calling for his minions and starting to cast offensive spells at her.  An errant fireball caught on an important and flammable piece of machinery, and it was mere moments before the entire warehouse Mei-Ling had been taken to was ablaze.  Losing track of the criminals, she did the first thing that came to her--rushed over to help the still-bound second victim.  This delay cost her her only avenue of escape however, and the building collapsed atop the two new Dark Elves.
An instant later, Mei-Ling sprung from her bed, the flames gone as her surroundings were entirely alien to her.  In the bed across the room from her lay the other victim, her memories completely erased.  Scoping out the room, she discovered the other girl's name, Niu, on her new student ID card.  Swearing to protect this blank slate of a girl and help her however she can, Mei-Ling began her career at MSF High.  She tries to help Niu have the most "normal" life here possible, which often keeps her busy as Niu is the target of occasional shadow attacks, which decrease as she becomes more acclimated to her new life and gains new memories, friends, and talents.  Some of the school's staff have been eying Mei-Ling as a potential Shadow Defense Force member, but she has declined the role and will likely continue to do so until she considers Niu completely safe.  Mei-Ling has come to appreciate the increased strength that has come with her new body, and pushes herself to be as strong as possible, which naturally led her to the battle arena, where she competes to prove her ability, though as she spends more and more time with her roommate she's happier and happier to see Niu in the audience, cheering her towards victory.

Eh, and the mind hack stuff out of MSF High. I would presume that graduates keep some sort of countermeasure on them for this kind of thing.

Most graduates are a high enough level that they've got the willpower to resist it, but there are magical and scientific countermeasures.

Do nyu have some sort of gauge or reference for measuring the ability to resist physical or mental changes?

In MSF High's roleplaying system all spells are avoided through a stat roll, generally defense(for spells that target the corporeal form or affect the environment), agility(for spells that themselves have a primarily physical form and can thus be dodged), or personality(for spells that target the mind directly).  There are abilities that can boost any of these means of defense as well.
