The new world did not welcome humans and their helpers. Those plants that were not outright poisonous contained the wrong nutrients to sustain life. Life would have been impossible were it not for the primitive organism called "slick," a black, viscous muck that lay in pools all over the planet. A renegade group of centaurs discovered quite by accident that it would, under the right conditions, merge with their cells, altering them to enable the centaurs to live in their new home without technological intervention. It gave them the ability to digest the local plants, and improved the function of their cells to heal injuries.

There were side-effects, though. One was that the slick seemed to concentrate in the reproductive organs of its host, causing them to operate much more enthusiastically. It was like puberty all over again as the males and females both became hypersexualized. Stallions penises began to grow, expanding far beyond any size ever seen. Their testicles grew full and heavy, stretching their overburdened scrotums. Changes to the females were not so readily apparent, but inside, their ovaries grew many times over, filling with eggs. At each ovulation they began producing multiple eggs.

Another side-effect, though was that fertilization became less common because of the improved cells of the uterus. Many mares could no longer get pregnant at all. About twenty percent could still get pregnant, but only if they had sex almost constantly, keeping their uterus perpetually awash in sperm. About one in twenty mares, however, seemed to go the opposite extreme—every egg seemed destined to implant no matter how seldom they had sex. These would come to be known as the Sun House mares, after the large building where they lived and were cared for.

These mares are revered by all members of the Village. It is a fundamentally life-changing event for a young girl to discover that she is destined to be a Sun House mare. She finds out when she becomes sexually active. Almost from the very first time she experiences a stallion gushing into her, she will become pregnant. That alone is not proof, as chance dictates that even some of the normally fertile mares may become pregnant so readily. But for the Sun House mare, her belly will begin to swell sooner and faster, because she will have multiple foals growing inside her—five, six, seven... even more. The slick constantly regenerates, repairs, and improves her body, allowing her uterus to expand to accommodate virtually any number of foals, and allowing her to give birth to them when the time comes.
