In the Savannah Kudu kingdom of Tawaratava, the royal family is greatly beloved by its people. They have led with benevolence and equanimity for more than a thousand years. The people have come to revere the members of the royal family as living embodiments of the prosperity of the country. As the royal family thrives, so too do the citizens of Tawaratava. For generations, one of the duties of every member of the royal family has been to be the very embodiment of the prosperity and fertility of the kingdom. When a member of the royal family becomes pregnant, the people rejoice as though the children were their very own family members. When nobody in the royal family is pregnant, the people become restless and uneasy. Fear grows that the kingdom is no longer blessed, and that perhaps the fates have chosen to end their prosperous life in the savannah.

As a result, every member of the royal family feels a great obligation towards their people to spend as much of their time pregnant as they possibly can. From age twelve onwards, the princesses are under great pressure to get and stay pregnant. Those princesses who become pregnant youngest are most beloved by their people. Those who bear more than one child at a time are even more highly revered. After many generations of this, it is now quite common for a princess to give birth to twins at age thirteen, and have at least one set of quadruplets before she is twenty. The queen will be chosen from those princesses who have borne the greatest number of children. The last queen, before ascending, had already been pregnant twenty-nine times, giving birth to more than one hundred fifteen children, including two sets of quintuplets.

The people could tell she was special right away, because she developed very young, having the full breasts and wide hips of an experienced queen by age twelve. As a princess of nineteen, she had already given birth nine times. She seemed to love being pregnant, and after each birth, she did her utmost to ensure that she would become pregnant again as quickly as possible. With each pregnancy, her belly swelled larger and larger, and the people revered her as a deity. In her twentieth year, her belly swelled once again, but this time at an awe-inspiring rate. By her third month, it was as large as the belly of a commoner who was alredy in labor. By her fifth month, she could no longer rise from her bed due to the weight of her rapidly swelling belly. When her labor pains finally began, she had swollen into a fertility goddess. For two days, she labored, birthing child after child into the arms of her nurses. By the time it was over, she had given birth to sixteen children, each of them as large and healthy as a baby could be. No queen before or since has ever equalled her feat, and to this day, Shamatira is one of those most popular names for girls, bestowed by hopeful mothers.
