Description
Rabbit! That was the first thought that came to your mind as you caught the scent. You didn't notice the egg smell mixed in; you were too hungry. With your stomach growling, you ran down the scent trail.
You heard your prey close, so you slowed your pace, not making a sound. You made sure you were upwind of your dinner. Seeing the flash of blue-gray fur in front of you, you leapt and pinned your meal to the ground.
Or so you thought.
Eggshells beneath your pads shattered, embedding them into your paws. You ignored the pain and looked for your meal, growling.
"Ah, a wolf? Nice try, mate." The rabbit was leaning against a tree, sharpening something in its front paws. You were taken back by its stance; you've never seen a standing rabbit before.
"What are you, a rabbit kangaroo?" you asked.
"I'm a bunny." The rabbit came closer to you, boomerang ready to throw. "What did you plan on doing with the Easter Bunny, anyway?"
You carefully stepped off the eggshells, sitting down. "The ... Easter Bunny ... as in ..."
"The bunny that hides eggs all around the world at Easter? Yup, that's me, mate." Bunny chuckled.
You licked your injured paws. "Sorry. I smelled rabbit, I'm hungry, and you smelled ... well, like dinner."
Bunny narrowed his eyes. "I don't think you want to eat me, mate." He pulled out his boomerangs.
You snorted. "Well, duh. Not now. You're a legend among ... my kind ... before we went extinct." You trailed off, remembering the slaughter.
"Ah, that must be hard for you, mate. Well, I need to get hidin'. Little ankle biters want their Easter Eggs." Bunny thumped the ground twice and vanished into a hole.
The next year, you waited for him again. You had managed to make yourself like a legend among humans, but you still hated them for what they did to your pack, to your kind. This time, though, you were in your human form. Of course, the ears and tail made you stand out horribly, and the little pads on your hands and feet made everyone stare. Since there was nobody out to see you, you didn't bother hiding them.
You kept looking for him, hoping you could see him. "Bunny?" you asked.
"Right here, mate. You going to try to eat me this time?" he asked.
You turned around. "Yeah, I'm going to eat you like this. Do I look like I'd eat you this year? I had a good meal before I came."
Bunny chuckled. "Good, mate. Want to help hide eggs with me?"
Your eyes brightened. "Do I ever!" You grinned, moving closer to Bunny.
"Then get hidin'!" Bunny handed you a basket full of eggs.
You smiled to yourself as you hid eggs with Bunny. It was nice to be with someone who didn't care about how you looked. To not be looked down on, to be normal.
It was almost like the slaughter didn't happen.
But you knew it was true. Your family was dead, your friends were gone, and wolf pelts were displayed everywhere. It made you sick, just to look at them. The people who were murdered because of Man's greed. Your people.
"What's up, mate? You've been standin' there for about five minutes. Goin' to hide eggs or not?" Bunny asked.
"No, I'm just thinking about how nice it is to be with someone who doesn't care what I look like." You smiled at Bunny. "I've been so lonely, ever since Man killed my pack. They killed everyone, and for all I know, I'm the last one alive." Your smile faded.
"Ah, is that why wolf pelts are so expensive now? Not like I care. All I do is make eggs, decorate them, and hide them." Bunny shrugged.
You sighed, shaking your head to clear your thoughts. "I'll hide these now." You began to hide them.
As Bunny reached for an egg (as he was helping you), his paw grazed your hand. You froze, locking eyes with him. "You have pads, too ..." you mumbled. "Can I see?"
Bunny turned his paw over, allowing you to examine it. Once you were done, you went back to hiding the eggs. Within seconds, you were done.
"Want to help me hide the rest?" Bunny asked.
Your face lit up like it was Christmas. "Of course!" you squeaked.
After a long day of hiding eggs and sneaking glances at Bunny, you returned to your 'home'. You wanted to see Bunny again, but it wasn't possible anymore. There was no way you'd get lucky a third time.
Your stomach growled, and you sighed, shifting and going out to look for food. It as hard to smell anything over the eggs and dye, but you managed to find a deer. You took it down with ease and helped yourself to your dinner. Until something hit your shoulder. You howled in pain and whirled around, looking for your attacker.
There! There was a man hiding behind a tree, dressed in black. If he hadn't moved, you wouldn't have seen him.
You pelted toward the man as he raised his gun again. The moonlight glinted off the barrel, and you skidded to a halt.
"Come any closer, beast, and I'll kill you." The man's gravelly voice sent shivers down your spine. This was no ordinary hunter; this was an experienced wolf trapper.
You growled, wondering how you could get away. Preferably with eliminating him.
"Duck, mate!"
Without hesitation, you ducked as Bunny threw one of his boomerangs to the trapper.
Mr. Trapper fell to the ground, unconscious.
You went up to him, sniffing him. Yes, he was the one who had killed your family. You growled, sinking your teeth into his throat. His blood filled your mouth, and you let go. You hated his blood on your teeth, but he deserved a more horrible way to die. Preferably with your claws sinking into his flesh, tearing his heart, lungs, anything vital.
"Good one, mate. But did you have to kill him?" Bunny asked.
You just went over to the stream and washed the blood from your mouth. "Of course. He killed my family. My friends. Hell, he deserved a worse way to die than from my teeth." Your hatred for him trickled into your voice.
Bunny watched you turn to face him. "I never knew such a pretty wolf could be so deadly. Maybe you'd like to ... er ... help the children?"
You perked up. "Children? Yeah, I love playing with them! They don't know about my kind ... until their parents tell them about us. It's all because of those stupid rumors that we make more of us by biting. It's a lie, too. That hasn't ever happened, and I know it won't now. It's all because of those Nightmares Pitch created about my kind."
Bunny gave you a confused look. "You know Pitch?" he asked.
"Of course. I'm a spirit, not a wolf." You shrugged. "But nobody ever sees me. I hate it."
Bunny was silent for a moment. "How would you like to help me with eggs?"
"I wouldn't like it." You snorted and turned your back to him.
"Why not, mate? I know I'd like it if you would ... unless ... you hate me." Bunny frowned.
"I'd love it! I love being around you! Maybe we could have cute little wolf-bunny kids!" You chuckled at the image. "Okay, no kids ... but I'd love it!"
That's how it all began. You and Bunny were always busy at Easter, making eggs, trying new designs, maybe even a 'scuffle' around the Dye River, with one of you dying your fur from falling in.
