Description

This pose was held for four and a half weeks, for a total of about 65 hours. During the first and second weeks, our model looked up at all the students as we drew him, so I drew him looking straight forward even though it felt a little uncomfortable. Later on he stared at a fixed point on the ground, but I think the drawing is actually a little stronger with him staring right at the viewer. It seems to match the pose well, which to me seems a little aggressive. (Also, I didn't have the heart to change my drawing after so many hours were already spent on it!)

Thank you for your kind words! I did use charcoal for this, and the size of the paper was 48 x 66 cm (about 19 x 26 inches.)

So beautifully drawn, just astonishing. The facial lines are so strong and the reflection of light on the chest is just so natural. Hats off.

Brilliant ... well done. Β Yes, I understand the issue of gazes (in both directions). Β But this gaze looks quite strong, not aggressive

Thank you so much for your kind words!

To me, the pose seemed a little like a "warrior," as if he was ready to swing the stick he was holding, so strong is a better word than aggressive. I wish I had a little more time to refine some areas, but of course there are always things we would change in hindsight!

And on changing things ... one lesson I have learnt from life drawing ... you have to know when to stop. Β Overworking a piece can kill it.

That is true. It is always hard to know when exactly something is finished, or at least I find it difficult. The nice thing about having a set amount of time for a study like this one is always knowing the exact point I have to stop working!
