Nice variations, are they based on your own designs?
Here is a list of "in-universe" variations, including the Weyland Storm Rifle (that the Pulse Rifle is based on):

In the movie it is a 10mm caseless explosive round

The prop version was a Thomson with plastic around itΒ

If you used a 4 column mag, you might get 50 or soΒ rnds in the mag. I know at least one real worldΒ 9mm smg with such a mag. But 95 rnds is unlikely.

I'm guessing that 10x24mm does more damage at the price of ammo capacity.

As per my previous comments, you cannot physically fit 99 rounds of 10x24mm ammunition in the magazine, 25 is the maximum that will fit.
it's another case of film makers not paying enough attention to detail.

I personally believe that I'm looking to much into this and that 25 rounds would be a stupid and ineffective ammunition capacity to be used when fighting the aliens

Well it's supposed to be explosive tipped light armour piercing, so it theoretically should be better, and this was the first time they had encountered the species. I don't remember anyone ever reloading in Aliens, but then as they magically held 99 rounds, they were supposed to have enough.
it's not that you're looking too much into it, it's just that if I draw a weapon I want it to function like a real weapon so the fact that 99 rounds wouldn't fit in the magazine really bugged me.
Also, there is the fact that a soldier is generally issued with several magazines. I was issued with 4 x 30 round magazines; 3 in an ammo pouch and 1 in my rifle so that's 120 rounds. when I had the minimi I had 200 link (100 on the weapon and 100 in my pack)
On patrol we used to have about 2,000 rounds for 12 men and that was expected to last 10 minutes in a firefight and hopefully by that point reinforcements would arrive!

yeah i know but physically you can't fit 99 10mm rounds in it!

it's caseless ammo, the propellant is in or attached to the bullet, allowing a smaller surface area or more bullets in mag

They're still 10 x 24mm and the mag is pretty small, still doesn't make sense that you can put 99 rounds in it... :/

wow, ok this was a while ago...
I like to think of it as a block of propellant and bullets that get separated during the firing sequence (similar to how mass effect explains their metal slugs). maybe the bullets make up the bulk of the mag, and they have some kinda ultra efficient propellant? would explain the seeming lack of any sort proper sights and real range and accuracy, if it's just chucking odd shaped blocks of metal downrange hmmm....it is meant to be armour piercing round though... I dunno man, i guess sci-fi has a bunch of logical fallacy, or we don't have the right tech to be able to work it yet

Aye, totally necro'd the topic, only noticed after placing my comment how old the discussion was. It's just, the M41A is such a believable sci-fi weapon, it might even fool slight gun-nuts into believing it's a real life weapon, that's why I think the 99 rounds kind of break the credibility. But perhaps there is a way, like you said yes.

I get yah, I know everyone bashed colonial marines, but I liked that they reduced the ammo count on the new hero pulse rifle to 40, it just made more sense. only thing that peeved me was lack of select fire (that burst-fire goodness xD )
