Description I will admit that I have very little in way of textual explaination for my latest method of coloring, as I am absolutely terrible at explaining such things, and am still figuring the whole thing out myself. Suffice to say, though, I have been starting off in rendering everything in a monochromatic scheme, and adding color overlays to it in order to achieve the effect I'm going for in terms of light and mood. Even if I can't explain it in a manner that makes sense, I'm hoping that at least posting a visual example of the steps I've been going through may help folks out, and maybe give them an insight into how I've been working in Photoshop CS3 as of late

In the fifth panel, the big guy on the left I notice has a gradation as do the kid and the cloth to his right, but the the area surrounding him doesn't. How did you do this? Were they each selected with the magic wand or lasso tool followed by coloring the gradation in with a brush. Or did you use the gradation tool? Or is none of this correct and you just carefully painted it in without selecting anything? Please, if you can tell me your process for this step. I've seen it in god knows how many works and it looks awesome, but I can't figure out how it's done.

Hi there! Sorry I'm only just getting back to you on this - I haven't had much free time in a while. I often tend to flat-color each character on their own layer, and then lock that layer. That way I can put a gradient on it (Sometimes using the gradient tool - which was the case here, I believe. Other times I might paint it in) without effecting surrounding elements

Interesting tutorial. I think the monochromatic scheme approach definitely simplifies things. Sometimes I think thinking about color confuses the basic feel you are trying to achieve. In some of those snapshots, it looks like you had some ideas, but then discarded them as you progressed, like the cracked tile ground in the 4th frame. I kinda liked that ground effect in general, but i think your later decision to keep it simple suited the overall scene better.

This really does help alot! I've just begun trying to do things with monochrome or grayscale then doing color overlays on top.... Its taught me a lot about value and tone and how to be careful not to get an image that ends up too light or too dark. (which has been my problem for forever)

Thanks bunches!

This is a really interesting technique. I'll have to give it a shot sometime. I much prefer phases of work showing the process over text explaining it. Thanks!

Dude.
I know how to use the programs well enough not to need the text but this was actually a really good tutorial.

You start with the lighter tones, which most people don't. Nice method too.
Definitely a +fav.

huh...that's really interesing. I'll have to try that out. I've always thought it easier to capture the lighting of a scene through monochromatic schemes, but never thought to apply it like this.

i've got this compulsive fav'ing tick when it comes to tuts. its like my ghost wants to absorb all art knowledge, when consciously, i'm too asstardedly lazy to attempt any of it. i must be an artist's inner dilemna of black-and-white 69s, spinning infinately, till i explode into a nice dull grey.

Hm, never thought of going about colouring like that, but it makes sense. Conquers large areas at a time. I can see how that would make someone feel less overwhelmed at tackling a piece with that much going on.

Did you learn this on your own or was it part of Ben's class? Either way great process and of course, artwork. I should really post more of my recent work on Deviantart. You've inspired me.
