Description
This is a commission for Michele-Lee Phelan, of The Art of Faery ( [link] and [link] ), using her draggyflye design for the cover.I've also kept a running "how I did it" on my site, [link] Go to Handmade Books, and there is a "Binding Construction" link down the page. NOT a tutorial, I left a lot out and didn't go into the covering at all *wink*.
This is one HELLAVA book. Big, and heavy. Very heavy... it weighs about 2.5 kilograms. Definately an "oof" when you pick it up. Get out your ruler, it really is huge.
28cms tall
20cm wide
7cms thick
Another Springback (mmmm, yummy.)
170 ish pages... somewhere between that and two hundred, of high-quality watercolour paper, hand-stained.
Hand-dyed leather.
Raised bands.
Green aventurine, bloodstone and quartz point crystals, wooden 'pin'.
Hand sculpted and painted draggy, and gem settings etc.
Monogrammed spine. Crystal-ended marker ribbon.
I am SO glad this is over.... but at the same time, it has been part of my life for so long that i'm a little sad.

I love this book! Attention to detail always catches my eye. The headbands look hand sewn, Are they?
Did you use polymer clay or is that metal on the book?
Great job. I also like the six cord with the open center spine for the inlay.
Cheers!

Another gorgeous work. I would so love to some day be able to afford one of your books. They seem like they would pair up nicely with the hand made fountain pens I make.

Thank`s a lot It was very interesting and useful for me to read.
The most interesting part it`s how your work with leather and design the cover, in what material. But it`s your professional secret and ofcourse you should keep them
I`ll be looking forward for you new masterpiece

I was taken completely aback by this and the progress....
Astounded. I've always made crude books for myself since I was little, but the level of craftsmanship that you employ goes beyond anything I could possibly image for myself. (Though I must admit I'm jealous enough to want to someday make REAL books for myself, even though I have no real tools... ..)
This is probably one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen, hand made or not. I am quite obsessed with books in general, so that is really a big statement from me!
These images make me want to touch this book so much... run my fingers over the leather, the clay dragon... Everything.
Your gallery just made my night, knowing there are still people in the world who put this much love and beauty into books.

"Your gallery just made my night, knowing there are still people in the world who put this much love and beauty into books."
And it made my night knowing that there is someone who feels that way! I admit it too... i'm a bibliophile in so many ways. I love to read, create, and appreciate books in themselves, and their wonderous history as an art form. They are little pieces of magic. What else is there that can take you any where, any time... put you inside someone else's head?
I love being able to create the cases that might hold another world, someone else's vision.
*L* Sorry, late night and rambling.

Bibliophile... I've just learned a new word! I should have heard this before, as I definitely would describe myself as one.
I have a fascination and addiction to books... I have a large collection of unused journals that I bought because the feel or look of the book was just so beautiful, or special, or it just felt (physical, tactile) so neat when I held it... It's a sickness.
Your view on books is much like my own; I can really appreciate that!
