Using Capture NX for IR shots is 100 times easier.

I don't have it and of course never worked with it. What is the difference?

MUCH less steps. Easier selective editing as well.

This is very useful indeed, Christian. I use Lr but not PS. However, I'm pleased to say that my workflow is more or less the same. The one technique which I had not been useing was outlining the division between sky and the rest with a soft masking brush, and then filling in the mask area. I must try that.

Great Stuff

Thank you David! Yes try it, it gibe the buildings a more "natural" look and a better contrast to the blue sky.

I haven't done much yet.Β  A lot of what I read online states that you need to utilize a custom white balance when doing IR.Β  What's your take on that?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

myINQI In reply to jxsnyder [2014-09-03 13:57:46 +0000 UTC]

If your camera can shoot in RAW you can do my tutorial without custom white balance. If the camera can't shoot raw you need it.

I have a Fujifilm Finepix HS50 EXR
The auto whitebalance gives a very purple photo.
The -100 whitebalance in the DNG profile editor slightly changes the hue of the purple, but it's still very very purple.

Did you use the eyedropper on a bright foliage?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MaxArceus In reply to myINQI [2014-09-03 06:18:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes. It usually turns the whiteblance to 2000-2300, and the green/purple thing to -150, but it still isn't enough.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

myINQI In reply to MaxArceus [2014-09-03 06:34:53 +0000 UTC]

Then you should try "daylight wb" on your camera, I don't know you're model but for all of my cameras this workflow works fine. You you set manual/pre WB with your camera?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MaxArceus In reply to myINQI [2014-09-03 06:47:21 +0000 UTC]

With the daylight whitebalance on my camera, it becomes even more purple. I've made a custom whitebalance by shooting a freshly painted roadstripe on a sunny day with the filter in place. I know that paint's made to reflect both visible and infrared light near perfectly, hence it's so white.Β
This makes all photos brownish red on my camera. If I export them to JPG, all the photos are still way to brownred to do the colourswap. I need to autowhitbalance them in GIMP afterwards, and even that doesn't always work.
If I shoot the pictures in RAW though, once I import them to Lightroom, the colours shift. When it's still loading the picture, they're browish/red, like how it looks like on the camera, but once it's done loading, the pictures turn palebueish.

And you choose in Lightroom the profile created in the DNG profiler? Hmmm... if you want you can send me one of your raw files and I will try it to get the right WB out of it!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MaxArceus In reply to myINQI [2014-09-03 06:59:47 +0000 UTC]

I've tried for a loonnggg time, 2 days ago I finally managed to get something that (in some cases) looks descent, but it's way more than just a whitebalance, it's about every single option I could use
How should I send it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

myINQI In reply to MaxArceus [2014-09-03 07:01:51 +0000 UTC]

upload it in a zip file to your stash and send me the link via note

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MaxArceus In reply to myINQI [2014-09-03 07:16:03 +0000 UTC]

Uploading now, it's 3 raw files, 1 one a cloudy day with my custom whitebalance, 1 one a sunny morning with my custom whitebalance, and 1 on the same sunny morning taken right afterwards with daylight whitebalance, and all 3 of them in JPG, as how my camera made them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

myINQI In reply to MaxArceus [2014-09-03 07:24:12 +0000 UTC]

uuuuuh, now we have found the problem! jpg! My workflow works only well with raw files directly out of the camera. The DNG profile editor calibrates the raw file new and in this raw file are all the color information to switch them to the right position. In your jpg are non of this informations, so you can't bring it to the right balance. You should shoot in raw if your camera support it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MaxArceus In reply to myINQI [2014-09-03 07:31:25 +0000 UTC]

Nono, I do use RAW, I but for comparison I took the photos in the mode that makes both a JPG with camera settings, as a RAW file.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

myINQI In reply to MaxArceus [2014-09-03 07:33:49 +0000 UTC]

and you should send me the raw file out of the camera then I can try my best on it. (not dng converted from jpg files in Lightroom)
