A rustle in the trees above caught her attention. Margo briefly glanced at Merle. Right! She coughed, cleared her throat, trying to compose herself. “Good,” she said, playing it suave, yet her giddiness was obvious even to the bird. “Otherwise, I’d have plucked Merle for nothing.”

Gently, she tucked the black feather behind his ear, taking a moment after to admire him. Her smile was soft, warm, same as the look inside her eyes. “I love you too.”

Varnas opened his eyes and lifted his head and smiled. He wished he could hold this memory in his mind forever. Every single detail. "I'm the luckiest wolf in the world to have you by my side."
