Description
(to my mother)Sparrows,
I’ve been told,
Would never be satisfied
without their wings.
(I can’t judge.
I’ve never flown)
So Icarus too,
Would succumb. without
Breathless flight
His eyes would
Dull;
His back grow bent
His fair hair grey.
Age is not for the rash
Of yesteryear,
The legendary heroes
Could not bear the trial of rust.
It takes a strong person
To live in the monotony of
Today.
But in Daedalus too
There lies fault.
The man never struck out
Never flew too high or
Too bold.
A man of figures and numbers.
Facts and mazes.
Flight patterns and weight ratios.
Boy,
Thought Icarus,
I hope I’m never Boring
Too afraid to live.
I hope I’m
Never
Like
My
Dad.
And so
He embraced the warmth
And the high
Of the flight
Got drunk off the sun,
With no aid from Bacchus.
And down he plunged
As his father cried out
From his safe course below.
Icarus would have lived
If you were his role model.
