As has just been published this week in the prestigious scientific journal PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America), the global population of cheetahs has been estimated at only 7,100 individuals which are confined to about 9 % of its historical range. The articles argues that the species should be "upgraded" from "vulnerable" to "endangered". The article calls for incentivizing protection and promoting sustainable human-animal coexistence across large multiple-use landscapes, rather than just focusing on national parks and other protected areas.
