Description Painter 11. Commission.

A heavy reworking of my painting "Unusual Rescue". A detailed background was added and the figures were *very* revised. (The original is here: [link] )

A closer look at some of the details can be found here: [link]

*****

The idea for the piece is original to the one who commissioned me:

A mermaid comes across a human diver who has recklessly swam too deep and run out of air. To save the diver's life, the mermaid transforms her into a mermaid.

Heavy reworking?

Well; the original looks pretty darn good to me!
This one has, of course, more detail, more background, more sense of drama.
But a room for improvement imo, is that breasts under water
have a slightly upward buoyancy!

Why isn't she still wearing her wetsuit and gear? Great work by the way.

Thank you. It was a result of the magic in the transformation, and a symbol of her shedding being human to become a mermaid.

*fave'd* ... This does outdo the original, with its adding the dramatic context of the diver's fall to the depths and the suggestion of her transformation.

The varied shading of their skins is especially adept and beautiful. Perhaps more so than would be possible to actually see at this depth ... but we have to make allowances for being able to perceive what they're doing!

I like your having a sizable preview. (And not watermarked, especially not that dA default!) Though I'd have liked its being 180KB or more, as was the original.

What is welcome, though, given this 90KB version, is your separate posting of the details. It helps a great deal in my considering whether to buy a print.

Thank you. I always felt the original fell short of telling the story as it could be told and had looked forward to when I could do better justice to it.

You're right about the skin. I had the conflict of being more accurate to the environment or making the figures the priority. I opted for the figures. Even with the blue water-effect overlay I used to sort of bridge the gap, so to speak, I toned down because I felt the figures were getting too dark and lost under it.

Usually I watermark commissions, but since I was making this one available as a print, I had to use the unmarked version. But I do try to make my watermarks very unobtrusive, since it bugs me when parts of the piece are obscured, whether it's mine or someone else's work.

I don't know about the filesize, I just tried to make sure it fit the screen at the largest size I could get away with without requiring much scrolling of the page. I'm glad you found the Details collage useful. With as much detail as I tend to put into paintings like this, it's annoying to have all that work lost to filesize constraints, so the Details.

beautiful!do tell me how u did the wonderful scales on their tails as well as the bubbles!^^tanx!

Neemeister In reply to darkn2ght [2010-05-03 01:33:39 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

Both the scales and bubble effects were from using textures. I used some images of bubbles and fish and made them into papers (Painter 11). Then using a Hard Pastel brush, set on very low grain (which adds color only on the 'upper' surface /lighter part of the 'paper', and on another layer I painted where I wanted the texture.

Some of the bubbles I hand-painted without the texture, to pull in a little more detail, but only a few.

I didn't think the original could be much improved. You make it look effortless.

Thank you! I wish it had been effortless, lol It took me what seems like forever to finish it.

Hi. Sorry about getting back to you. I had lost track of your comment.

I'm not quite understanding what you mean? Could you explain in more detail? And are you interested in a commission or just wanting to inspire me to paint your idea?

If it's just for inspiration, I'd still like to hear your ideas, but I'm not going to be able to work on any non-commission paintings for quite a long while.
