Description This is another version of my Mars map, showing the extent of the various city-states's and alliance's influences. Tell me what you think, whether it's easier to 'read' than the original: [link]

I LOVE THIS.

And I like how the Hellas Sea looks like the Black Sea, and Odessa on this map is where it would actually be if this one was on the Black Sea. That's difficult to word.

Thanks always good to get compliments, lol. The Martian Odessa is actually from a series of books by Kim Stanley Robinson, but the placement of it is mine Ironically, Martian beaches really would be black or very dark red, since Martian rock is mostly low-density volcanic, like basalt, rather than our lighter-coloured granite and limestone...

Cool, good to know I'm not sure if I like it any better myself, but I admit it IS easier to think about now... lol

Well on the other one you could not tell the spheres of influence. I would have thought the Empire would have settled that gap between New Ottawa and Churchill, or at least built a string of settlements between them to cut it off from other powers.

A lot of the land there is treacherous, swinging between brackish swamps and icepacks through the long Martian year. There are minor settlements outside the zones of influence, but by the laws governing territorial control on Mars, only settlements of a certain size are able to claim sold sovereignty over lands.

On another note, are the lands around Canal clear enough that they're contested between the GCU and the Hellas Community, do you think?

Cant' be brothered to drain swamps to claim their rightful territory?

Typical Canadians Ay?

Oh and it's quite clear that they are contested.

Hah indeed... although half the trouble is that the land consists of thousands of little watersheds in the former craters. Just to get as little lakes as they have has taken miles of plumbing and pumping, excavation of new aquifers etc. Worse is that the lakes and swamps aren't even fresh water - Mars hasn't had an active hydrocycle long enough to leach the salt out of the regolith/soil yet, so when any water collects, it quickly becomes brackish...

Good

Why not make a big crater in it then to drain the water into it?

Honestly if they don't try harder Mars will end up run by natives, and we can't have that. Perhaps they could import some Dutch people to fix their water problems. Or better yet make use of those damned beavers.

Ahh but there's laws against substantially altering Martian geography since the Reds got a bit of political clout under their belts

Ah well most of Mars' Dutch live in New Manhattan and settlements near Headwater, and the Nederlands themselves are under the rule of a technocratic dictatorship...

So why don't they act like the Empire they claim to be and do a bit of civilising with those robo-stoners and grubby reds.

Haha, robo-stoners... I'll have to remember that one lol

I really like this. I was a History Major, Geography Minor in university. I just love maps and nations. Mix scifi into it and I'm in Hog Heaven.

Thanks History and geography are actually the biggest problems with deciding the locations of settlements and borders and the like on other worlds - or rather, the lack of any human history or (often) geographic features that can be taken as a natural border. Terraforming helps of course lol
