Description
Why. Why why why.Whyyy do people feel the need to slap a sheath on everything? Is it empowering to draw penile sheaths? So much so that you gotta put it on everything?
Drawing genitals on your animals doesn't automatically make them more realistic, especially if they're not done correctly. Actually, that does the opposite; it shows everyone that you didn't use references. Accuracy to life proportions, shape, textures, and light; these things add realism. A dick? Nope. Balls? Uh, no. Boobs? Nipples? NO.
I don't draw genitals on my animals, because I just don't want to. This doesn't make my work any less good than the work of artists who do draw genitals, it just means I don't have to study the placement, shape, size, and proportion of things like sheaths and testicles.
If drawing animal genitals is something you do or want to do, then it's something you'll have to study and practice, just like any other aspect of art.
This might be a little NSFW for some people, but it really isn't.

Hello Nekonotaishou, very informative!! I hope I'm not too late. Would you mind explaining this photo or post a comment about it. It seems a bit confusing when I compare it to a lion.

That is very easy to explain. The cat is not sitting on it's butt, it's sitting on it's back gyazo.com/d79fac12eb6579b37a33… and is sitting in a 'u' shape. We are not looking at the forward part of its crotch area, but the far back part.

I luckily never saw someone putting sheaths on a cat. I mean if ou use references or ever looked at a cat it shoud be obvious they don't have those. Or... maybe every cat you see around is actually female??? Oh god!!
However, it reminds me of the time someone went nuts under one of grypwolfs drawings because the Vayrons had Sheaths and it was "too sexual" xD I wonder what they would say about this tutorial.

Ahah! This makes me laugh, I can't believe it's not common knowledge if you are drawing that animal or even making the effort to draw it's genitalia that you don't know where it actually is or how it really works. Thank you for this, I didn't know people had a problem with this till now. I have had cats in the past and yep that's where it is newbies. Behind. All those pictures you drew to make a point all bug me. XD That's good right?

It is a more common problem than it honestly should be.

I snorted and giggled at this... it bothers the heck out of me too... and it's REALLY prevalent in furry art! Another thing that drives me absolutely INSANE is when the genitals are put too far forward on the belly, or the anus too far back so it's like... attached to the freaking tail instead of where it SHOULD be... granted, this is more obvious in furry porn art, but it's done in lots of clean art I have seen too. Because, you know, the genitals ALWAYS have to be visible no matter what direction your animal is facing! xD

This bugs me just as much as people when they claim real adult wolves have blue eyes, when in-fact a pure-blooded wolf does not have blue eyes, only dogs and hybrids do. XD

Even in hybrids it would be a super low content wolfdog - like more dog than wolf in its bloodline. Mids to highs tend to always have the wolfy green/gold.

You brought up a really good point there. I normally don't draw those bits either but when it comes to line and movement, knowing about how these parts work helps.

One of my pet peeves is also when people draw freaking MASSIVE sheats, or make them thick round tubes, as if to draw extra attention to the fact that YEP HE GOT DONG.

I noticed that while looking for good images of horses for this tutorial, that real horses have much smaller sheaths that all the horse art would have me believe.... also that horse testes do not protrude from a side view, as lots of horse art would also have me believe...

Haha yeah. I wonder if overemphasizing the genitalia is similar to that phase many artists go through once they start studying anatomy and proceed to draw animals with super visible muscles, even if the animal is supposed to have thick fur. Gotta show you know it's supposed to be there?

nekonotaishou In reply to Hukkanaama [2017-09-04 22:50:05 +0000 UTC]
Maybe???
I admit I did that whole super visible leg muscles thing at least once and on a longhair character, too...

you can't be wrong if you don't draw them \(^-^)7 i0.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/f…
but to be more serious, I agree, if you want to go that far with the anatomy, great but at least know what your subject anatomy is, maybe you could add that on some fluffier animal like some wolf with a thick coat ( I assume probably winter coat), you barely see anything because the coat is too thick or some fur is hanging and hide it, you nearly have to look for the bits to see them in the first place because it's still there but more discreet, I say that because i've seen too many people drawing like enormous wolf parts or super noticable ones
the thing that is even worse... I was looking at reptile anthro because I wanted to create a reptile specie and I didn't know how to do that... I end up doing with the little I know as it couldn't be worse than what I saw... Reptiles are reptiles... so not mammals, why on earth does female reptile anthro have boobs ?! not to mention people drawing their reptile anthro in underwears with noticeable bits... don't they know that reptile have cloaca (I hope this is correct in English) and so male parts are not visible ? Imagine poor snake crawling with its part rubbing the ground, this makes no sense

My thoughts exactlyyyy
I did notice how hard it was to spot on wolves when searching for images for this tut. Like, unless it's the summer coat, you can barely see the junk on a wolf... yet you're absolutely right, people draw huge obvious sheaths on their wolves
Don't get me started on the bird and herp boobs Yes, cloaca is correct. I actually know someone who's rescued snake was in the past kept on an incorrect substrate, and part of the hemipenis got stuck on the substrate, and poor thing had to have part of it amputated :C

yeah, I don't know what people earn by drawing giant animal bits, that doesn't make them look more adult, I'd say it's the contrary, I more see like a little teen in their puberty phase that needs to show the world they're not afraid to draw sheaths like "I'm a real man ya know O^O ... " either that, or a teen with weird fetishes x'D
omg poor thing ;w;

People actually draw cats with sheaths!? o_O
It triggers me a teensie tiny bit every time I see messed-up genitalia. I mainly see it with canines but I'm sure I'll come across some ponies with problems sometime soon as well. e-o
Anyways.
This is surely useful to some people. Especially newbies that only just started drawing animals.

I've been asked why I don't draw my animals 'accurately' by including male genitalia. I even had a commissioner get upset and said their character "isn't flat down there" and required I slap shorts on him.
But no one has ever asked me why or gotten upset over the fact I don't draw female genitalia.
Hmmmmmm.

That... that is weird and rude. If they wanted a commission with genitals, they should have picked an artist that clearly shows in their gallery that they draw genitals! BC
That is odd, for sure. No one arms a stink over the subtle parts, huh.
