BASIC DESCRIPTION:
Gemmies are a bat-like quadruped creature who have a love for crystals, rocks and sparkly items. They often gather hoards of everything sparkly they can find deep in their communal caves. Ones that live domestically will often hoard a collection of their owner's jewelry in the corner of the household!
They have a particularly odd power, and it all depends on what crystal they have embedded in their thighs. Each crystal holds special properties, and gemmies carry them actively. For information on properties of crystals, go here: meanings.crystalsandjewelry.co…
All gemmies have specific powers and an energy about them, as well as an effected personality, related to their crystal.

EYES:
Pupils are slit, as they're nocturnal and have poor vision during the day. They often dilate and contract with their mood. The color of their iris varies, regardless of the specific breed. The pupil is most commonly black, although it can reflect a certain color in uncommon cases, while in rare cases, their scleras will be colored.

MOUTH:
Four fangs, two longer ones on the top jaw and two shorter ones on the lower. The rest of the teeth look canine-esque, besides their incisors in the front. Their tongues are often the color of their paw pads and eyes.

PAWS:
Both front and hind paws only have four digits, and no dewclaws. Their paw pads are very thick and plush, adapted to walking around rough cave floors. Paw pad color varies also regardless of breed, though it tends to match their eye & tongue color. Claws are often black or white, though in rare cases are seen in other colors as well.

WINGS:
Wings are too small to enable them to fly. Most commonly feathered, but in some cases will resemble bat wings. The only gemmies that are capable of flight are mutants, who are born with a mutation giving them wings with a large enough wingspan for long distance flying; other mutants can be born with no wings at all. Wings fold inwards when they run for less drag.

TAILS:
Tails are most commonly long and bushy, though are occasionally seen short and fluffy like a bobcat's. In rarer to highly unusual cases, they are seen with other tails, varying from the tail shown above to long, thin tails with fluff at the end (Not unlike a lion's tale), hairless reptilian tails, etc. They're often colored at the tips, though sometimes will be spotted or striped. Their tails are very expressive: they wag when they're happy, droop when they're sad, stiffened when they're agitated/angry, or raised fully when they're alert.

EARS:
Their ears are extremely important. Their poor vision leaves them up to their two heightened senses: their smell, and their hearing. This is why their ears are as large as they are. They are often found with ear fluff, but in some cases, will have no fluff in them whatsoever. Their ears, much like their tails, are also very expressive. They raise when they're attentive, listening, neutral, or on alert; lower when they're sad; pin when they're angry.

GEMS/HORNS:
One crystal is found on each of their thighs (two total on each gemmy), and the same crystal grows from their head in the form of one or two horns, which can vary in shape and length. Their gems depend on their parents' gems, and/or on the minerals in the surroundings they were born in. They carry the properties and physical traits of the crystals they have. For example, rose quartz gemmies are usually pink in color, and bring a friendly and loving energy about them. Green aventurine gemmies are different shades of green, and their presence brings luck and fortune, and so on.

DIET:
They're omnivorous, and usually feed on fruits, berries, large bugs and small rodents. If they live near water, they'll also catch fish. Though domestic gemmies have a weakness for sweets, and adapt well to people food!

HABITAT:
Originally, gemmies surfaced as cave-dwellers. As the species became more common, they adapted to all sorts of different terrain, and will often live anywhere so long as there is a cave-like hide for them.

TEMPERAMENT/DEMEANOR:
Gemmies are very docile, and more often than not, their intelligence allows them to be easy to train. They are a social species, and in the wild they'll often live in caves in large groups, and very scarcely live alone.

REPRODUCTION:
They're monogamous, and often mate for life. Males usually buck one another with their horns as to win a female over.

They lay clutches of 3 eggs, sometimes more and sometimes less. The male is responsible for protecting the eggs, while the female goes to find food. The eggs' shells are very thick and hard. Since they usually live in stone caves or mountain nooks, the risk of an egg breaking on rock is very high, so this lowers the odds.

Two breeds of gemmies can breed to make a crossbred gemmy, or a completely separate breed. If two gemmies are rare, their chances of having a mutant offspring are higher. If one or both gemmies are already mutant, their odds of even having offspring are very slim, but in the off chance they do have successful offspring, they lay a singular egg, and it has a chance of being mutant.

SEXUAL DIMORPHISISM
Appearance-wise, NONE. Both male and female have the same traits and don't have any unique traits based on their sex.
Behavior-wise, ALSO NONE. Both have the same temperament.
