Looks like a photograph. Absolutely wonderful. Is this based off any real person? Or do you not use reference models?

But you are so good at it. I guess I know what you mean. For a long time I just did landscapes.

Honestly I'm not good enough to teach something. But and made some nice tutorials I used. I collected them here :[link]
You can get direct help of these artist at cgpad : [link]

And now you. Can you teach me to improve my portrait skills ? Pleeeaaaase.

nerplexing In reply to farbenleere [2008-04-06 12:40:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah sure, I'll make a tutorial. Is there anything specific you want it to cover? Like, how to make incredibly realistic eyes? Hair? Etc?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

farbenleere In reply to nerplexing [2008-04-06 15:33:37 +0000 UTC]

Hair is definitely something I need learn. But what I really need (an nearly no tutorial explains) is how to start. The position of the eyes, nose, mouth. The right proportions and all that stuff.
A tutorial would be awesome but thats a lot of work. A few screenshots of your workflow with some words would work too I guess.

nerplexing In reply to farbenleere [2008-04-07 17:11:07 +0000 UTC]

I have a really really old tutorial that I made a long time ago, maybe I can post that one. Personally, I'd rather start a new one from scratch though, since I've gotten better at making the paintings more realistic since then and I think it would be more helpful. How often do you sketch free-hand? I'm very unorthodox when I sketch. I swear, I have three sketch pads, but I always end up using computer paper and a mechanical pencil and smudging the shadows with my fingers or a kleenex. But hey, whatever works!

farbenleere In reply to nerplexing [2008-04-07 21:25:49 +0000 UTC]

Hmm sounds like me but since last year with just one sketchbook. Before it was a loose paper collection too. What do you mean with free-hand ? Traditional ? Or without reference ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nerplexing In reply to farbenleere [2008-04-08 18:39:26 +0000 UTC]

sometimes with a reference, sometimes without.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

farbenleere In reply to nerplexing [2008-04-08 22:11:10 +0000 UTC]

Ah ok. most of the time without. I guess thats not good but I'm to lazy to search for reference.

freeship [2008-04-05 09:54:37 +0000 UTC]

Wow. Such detail

How did you do the lace corsetry thing? It looks so realistic

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nerplexing In reply to freeship [2008-04-05 21:19:41 +0000 UTC]

Lace is impossible. Start with a huge file that is 2.000px in at least one direction and go through with a very very small brush. Or you could do what I did and instead of painting every single thread of the lace, paint general areas with a small brush and swirl the colours together to get the soft feel.

Haukai [2008-04-05 06:55:26 +0000 UTC]

o.o This is great. I love the detail of the hair. If you don't mind me asking, how much time do you typically devote to your portraits?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nerplexing In reply to Haukai [2008-04-05 21:22:12 +0000 UTC]

It really depends. I will sometimes start a project then come back to it a month later [which makes it hard to keep acurate tabs on time]. But generally, I'll get in a painting mood and pull an all-nighter, no sleep, just painting away on the tablet and listening to music. So several nights of that, some hours in between. And depending on how specific I want to get, each one takes about a week, anywhere from 20 hours to 30. Of course, that's a rough approximation, I have no exact time.

What I really like is that your Tech specs. It's nice to see the tools that you use. Thanks for sharing that !
