Description
This is actually three icons, not just one funky one. I decided to scan them in all as a whole, rather than individually. I think they look better together. From r to l, it's Hecate, Athena, and Artemis.
This is based very heavily on an altar frontal of St. Margaret of Vilaseca, c. 1160-1190. Because of that, I made a conscious decision to NOT go with accurate anatomical proportions. So, yes, I know that their hands and faces and all that aren't correct.
ALSO, Artemis got chopped off at the side there, but since it's just the same brown bar on the right side that you see on the left, I didn't care. It wouldn't fit on the scanner, otherwise.
acrylics, shiny paint, and ink on small blocks of wood.
for sale at Pagan Pride Day 2011.

I really like the earthiness and warmth of your color palette in all of these. The one thing that draws my eye is the owl in the Athena piece. The color of it is a little distracting to me. I see that it's repeated in the eyes, but I feel like if it was repeated farther down and to the left, like a ring on her finger or something, it would balance it out a bit. I think the blackness of their hair is a nice touch, it gives a nice place for the eye to rest but has enough shape and movement it doesn't stall the composition.

That makes sense. I will go home tonight and see if I can figure out something to make steely in the picture besides the eyes and owl. Thank you!

These are gorgeous. Your artwork is all so interesting. I love the designs on their clothing, as well.

Stolen/adapted from the saint's frontal mentioned in the description! Can't really take credit for it.

Artemis! YES! Upthread you guys were discussing Hecate being "different," somehow and I think it's that she looks more intense. I dunno. Maybe it's the bigger irises that make it seem that way. I love Athena's eyes, personally, and her owl. I just can't get over how well you do the Byzantine icon style without directly copying it.

HAHAHHA, maybe because I'm not good enough to actually -copy- it properly! If I tried, I'd fail, so it comes out like this. Maybe. Hee. Thank you.

I like them all, but there is just something about Hecate's eyes that make that image for me.

Yeah, she's different somehow. I can't figure it. Just came out that way! Thank you!

Very nice! They do look like one piece. And if you hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have noticed about the bit you chopped off the Artemis painting because this way it matches the edge on the other side, with Hecate, who doesn't seem to have those brown borders.

Why, thank you!
If I had separated them even by a millimeter, to show that they were three pieces, the STOOPID SCANNER would have chopped them into three, not side-by-side, but individual. Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Heheheheh.
