Description
These are from a piece I made in 2005 I think. There was actually a full head I started with the muzzle near the end of 11th grade and I believe I finished the head and made the paws early in 12th grade. The original idea was to have a wolf materialize from nothing. But the teacher was rushing me so much I never did get it right and hated what it was turning into. Shortly after I dropped the class I stole the piece out of fear that the teacher wouldn't let me keep it and brought it to another room. I didn't want to keep the crappy parts the teacher rushed me through so thinking quickly I stomped on it, keeping the head and paws intact. After bringing the pieces home I decided to recreate a new body and did a really nice job on it. Never got around to tail and hind feet though and since left it to dry out. Today however I decided to take it out from hiding and have a look at what I had left. I knew the head collapsed as I had to repair it so often it was bound to do so when I put other stuff against it in the shelf it was in. I found the pieces I wanted to keep which was basically the muzzle and paws and decided to scrap everything else. The body was still in its original condition but after some thought I decided it wasn't worth keeping.
I only wish the fangs remained in the muzzle as they seemed to complete it. I remember how everyone loved to peer in and see all the detail inside and simply wanting to touch the one extended paw reaching out toward them.
This is one of those pieces that I would love to finish but I'm afraid bone dry pieces can be very difficult to rework without completely destroying the piece itself. The process means I have to rehydrate the piece very slowly and then carefully put everything together. Too much water and it will dissolve and look like its melting, not enough and it with crack and be even more of a pain to rebuild. Either way it will fall apart. I'm sure I can do it as I have done so before without any problems but this is a lot of broken pieces and requires a lot of time and effort for something I might as well start over with. Especially with so much of the grog washed away already.

I'm guessing this is clay then, huh? Wow. I can't even make a pinch pot out of clay! The paws look really good. I can't wait to see how it turns out if you decide to start on it again, or if you decide to start over.

Yep! Clay... I think I'm just gonna start over if I do decide to continue this project.
