Description
This is another one of those pages that says a lot in little time. First off... Minnow apparently sees herself as ugly. It's really not surprising that she feels that way, but it sure does suck. She's so cuuute with her freckles and messy hair! She ain't ugly at all.As for this Merfolk lady... yeah, it's kind of awkward that you didn't ask PERMISSION to sit next to this person you've only just met. But, that's just how Merfolk are, really. They tend to be very... touchy-feely. Although they speak our languages just fine, the "spoken" language they use to communicate underwater is very simple. They rely on body language and touch as much as sound to get a point accross, so they're very physical, as you can imagine. They like to huddle and send "positive energy" into friends in distress an' whatnot. You kind of have to explain to them why it's rude to get all up in somebody's face.
Minnow doesn't even know how to deal with this or whether she should accept the gesture or not. That's a bit of her autism showing through, I guess.
(And before anyone accuses me of appropriating autism, I'm an aspie myself, okay? Okay.)
That's it for today.

Still some animal-based instincts in the Merfolk, eh?

I meant the whole touchy feely thing you mentioned. Animals do that, don't they?

It's their culture. They've lived in a world without barriers or doors separating people for who knows how long. By comparison, the "human world" feels small and claustrophobic.

It's a neat touch that the merfolk have a sort of fin around their eye (to protect against strong currents?) instead of eyelashes.

Sort of. Think of it like the eyelids frogs and the like have.

are the merfolk at all related to seals? Personally I probably wouldn't mind, I'm weird like that.

Speaking as a fellow aspie, Minnow's pretty much having the exact same reaction I would have in this exact scenario.
And I'm glad we have confirmation that Minnow has autism, because we don't really get a lot of positively portrayed autistic characters in media these days.

Cool. Yeah, I'm just not going to have the characters themselves bring it up much. I'd rather people who are on the spectrum or know somebody who is read it and pick up on Minnow's little quirks and see "Oh, she's autistic. Neat."

I see what you mean by the approaching of autism thing. quick question, is minnow autistic? If so I'd be surprised.

When make a parallel to autism = "cultural" appropriation?
That's like accuse Eiichirō Oda to appropriation, because Fishmen are a parallel with black people in USA.

I threw that in there to preemptively shoot down anyone who assumes I'm not autistic and don't know what I'm talking about when I portray autistic characters. People are really touchy about "outsiders" infiltrating "groups" these days.

1. Well, it looks like this is going to be either very touching or very awkward.
2. So basically merfolk are empaths, basically able to sense emotions and relate to them?
3. Don't worry about "appropriating" anything. That's just a SJW term used for censorship.

NickOnPlanetRipple In reply to FatherOfMusho [2017-02-17 18:29:50 +0000 UTC]
Nah, it's... kind of a real thing. By my standard, at least, if someone apes something and acts like they own it when really they know nothing about it, that's appropriation. A more sinister scenario is if, say, one culture goes to another, like "Hey, look man, we totally like your stuff, your food, your clothes, your art, so we're going to put our own spin on that and pretend we made it, but make no mistake, we don't like YOU. We like the more superficial aspects of your culture that we can easily market to our own people, but we still hate YOUR people, so we're going to steamroll you after we take your stuff and do what we can to make things harder for you while just pretending to like you, okay?
Which is a really a-holish thing to do. It's like slamming and locking a door behind you after being the first to make it up a flight of stairs so other people aren't able to make it through... after taking their stuff.

Eh, yeah, but it's a bit blown out of proportion nowadays, especially when a work is transformative. Appropriation makes me automatically think of SJWs screaming, "cultural appropriation" and attacking a person or artist without any provocation. I mean, if it's done with pure malicious intent, that's when there's a problem. If it's done from a purely creative standpoint, it's quite forgivable even if you decide to make a character that some may find "offensive".

I'm still working on it. I'm doing three pages a day, and uploading one page a day. The first half of the book will be free (140 or so pages,) the rest will be sold on amazon for cheap.

Oh no, that's not the problem. The problem is that i cannot buy the rest of your comic. And since i can't it's just discouraging for me to keep on following the comics, but that's okay, artists need to share their work around, right? Keep up the good work.

Oh, really? Well, I won't be selling it exclusively on Amazon. Anyone who wants the comic can just buy it from me personally. If you had something like paypal, I'd send a link to a download of the book, easy peasy.

Oh no no, that's not the problem. It's just that i come from Brazil and since my country's money's value is quite low, it still would be expensive for me to buy...
Maybe in the future, when i start using USA or UK or Canadian money, i may buy it... (But i'm not sure that's gonna happen lmao. )
But thank you for the offer, that was really nice.

In all seriousness though, beautiful character design, she seems very sweet, and I love how expressive and vivid her eyes are :3

Yeah, you'll see more sweetness in the following pages. Making her eyes expressive was tricky, since these people don't have eyebrows. Just the ridges where eyebrow hairs would be.
