Season II Application

Season II Recap : Merle arrived in Dernee a little before The Storage Event. He befriended Ben Grady, Jimin Yi†, Avery Walker-Reeds† and got into fights with Garen Pedrosa, and then "Arlo" who bit off his ear. He managed to avoid getting a single scratch during the Mermaid Event. He was then approached by Tobias Barnett about his heist scheme and (after a fight) joined the bombing squad led by Huck Duffy† , meeting Esther Abney that way. The Masquerade Event strained his relationship with Collin Macdougall who chose to fill one of the canvases. After setting up the dynamite in the Mansion's bathrooms, he found Avery's dead body in the gardens and proceeded to get drunk while getting chaperoned by Garen Pedrosa.

Merle has quite a twisted mind, and he makes it so painfully obvious people tend to avoid being around him. On the one hand his obsession for physical violence and pain gets him into more trouble than he can take, resulting in him being beaten up to unconsciousness once in a while. On the other hand, well…he does like it. He even asks for more in the filthiest way, since he considers one good fight as the only kind of pleasure he can get from another human being.
Because of this maniac behaviour, Merle remains isolated and has very few people he can call "friends". He seems not to be affected by this loneliness, but he’s often seen spending most of his free time wandering around and bugging his “co-workers” at the factory and neighbors with his very sick sense of humour. He has some curiosity for all activities requiring craftsmanship, though only as an observer since his hands injuries prevent him from doing any meticulous work.
Oddly enough, the only ones who might witness him being good-mannered are women of a certain age or rank – and certainly any motherly figure.

Childhood

Born from an Absaroke mother and a somewhat eccentric French father, Merle was raised poor in Hunter, a small town of the Hudson Valley. Soon after his mother died of illness, Dominique’s father tried to make a living by getting involved in crooked businesses, such as procurer and robber or receiver of stolen goods, but he failed at keeping up with rival mobsters. He ended up not only poorer, but also chased by thugs. One day he fled from the town, but somehow he didn’t bring his child along with him – even now Dominique doesn’t know if it was to protect him... or if his father just forgot him. Being barely twelve, the kid spent years of misery in the streets, as a beggar and soon enough as a thief.

Being an orphan was quite a common thing in those days, and small gangs of children roamed the streets as pickpockets. However Merle failed to fit in the group, and because of his eerie look and behaviour he was often targeted by older orphans in need of a punching-bag. Here started his so-called boxing career: quite genuinely talented for hitting people in the right place at the perfect timing, he earned enough reputation and respect from the other thieves to ease his miserable condition. His violence actually saved him more than once from people attempting to send him to residential schools as well. As he turned 17, a boxing trainer who witnessed a clash between gangs offered to take him off the streets and teach him the technique he lacked. Thus he began to enter a real ring and revealed himself being a surprisingly violent fighter for his weight. He went on boxing thanks to his trainer, who sheltered and paid him and basically treated him as his god-child.

Adulthood

A couple years later though, Merle craved more money and made some by all necessary means: he accepted bribes and often took a dive during a fight to satisfy the gamblers, along with some other kinds of favours. His unbridled violence and rumours about his dealing led his heart-broken trainer to kick him out of official competition. Merle ended up homeless for the second time, though he had collected enough money to make a somewhat decent living for a while. He moved to New York in the year 1919, following the secretive track of outlawed boxing clubs that welcomed fighters from all walks of life. Most of those had dropped official boxing competitions due to racial discrimination or embarrassing criminal records. Merle managed to find a place in those clubs, obviously at ease with cheating and running numbers. When not fighting in underground rings, he would gladly be hired as a grunt by local speakeasies, escorting debt collectors or bootleggers...just about anything that required some muscle and very little qualm.

When he disappeared abruptly one night right before another underground fight, nobody cared to look around for him : the old sap was either on the lam or dead at last, right?

♦ According to boxing standards, Merle’s a “Counter-puncher”, which means he's a defensive style fighter who would take advantage of his opponent’s mistakes to catch him off guard. Facing him requires good feinting. Or a good ol’ handgun.

♦ Since he lost his mother when he was young, he knows close to nothing about his Crow heritage and family, and barely remember what her name was. It's a touchy subject.

♦ His hands get often broken due to his fighting with bare knuckles. Two fingers on the right hand are so damaged that he cannot stretch them anymore. Moreover, his body is constantly covered with bruises. His shoulder blades were broken with a crowbar when he was still a teenager – since then he has a slight stoop and feels uncomfortable whenever he tries to stand up straight.

♦ He is often seen playing with a coin, as a mean to keep his fingers working.

♦ He is unknowingly starting to show symptoms of a condition known as the Boxer's Dementia : pathological jealousy and paranoiac tendencies, unsteady gait and memory loss, poor coordination and occasional tremor. It got worse after the Dr Schuyler went missing.

♦ He can be found napping in very unexpected places. Empty bathtubs are a personal favorite, apparently.
