Description
I realized I didn't know the whole story while painting this. Here is one version - germanstories.vcu.edu/grimm/ra…Also, I altered her "gown" a bit to resemble a tower more than a mermaid tail.
Entered in this contest - FEBRUARY WINNERS AND MARCH CONTEST (ISOLATION)

I tried to sum up the story in a different way, maybe even grimmer than the original.
Thank you.

It's a great idea to bring this tale and Dali style together, but with a darker atmosphere. Excellent mix !

Thank you, most of those fairy tales were pretty dark originally.

I'm not sure, I really enjoy some meaningless pretty pictures too.
I want to concentrate on the aesthetics of my art more for a bit.

just don't fall into that " it has to look beautiful" pit.. i have just escaped it and it's nasty... pretty images with no meaning are pretty but uninteresting on the long run.. don't you agree?

nilwilnil In reply to Sabz0r [2018-06-23 21:20:53 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm, I agree but I need to incorporate more beauty into the meaning. Sometimes I get obsessed with painting something that shouldn't be part of the picture design wise, but I need it to tell the story. I need to find a happy medium between it being there and not there.

follow some happy artists... it's weird how our brains work when it comes to "stealing" unconsciously .. I realized yesterday ,for example, that i "copied" a friend's heart nipples from a drawing i watched for more than 10 times in the week before .. did not figure it out till i rechecked the gallery of my friend and noticed.. needless to say i feel like a fraud now

Sharp and soft strokes, I guess so, thanks. Fairy tales are great, especially the early versions, but even Disney versions are alright.

Love the eerie wrong feeling you get while looking at this, the way how she becomes her own tower, that's so deep somehow.. We hold ourselves back from reaching any goals, that's often the case, the prince is the ladder and he hands her scissors to free herself from her hair, it can be interpreted in so many ways, that's what I like so much about it :> Well done Wyrm!

nilwilnil In reply to Aya-Lunar [2018-04-16 18:34:27 +0000 UTC]
Becoming her own tower, I think this happens to people often. You hear of inmates that prefer their prison or just can't cope with the outside world. But I think this happens to a lot of people, getting used to whatever predicament they're in or getting too comfortable with themselves to change. Sometimes due to fear, sometimes due to complacency.

No, the other lady is more like a nature goddess that has gone awry due to humanities neglect.
She's kind of neutral and the scene depicts her evolution from care-free to worried.
This one is a little darker. The girl has been corrupted by more personal affairs (or maybe it's the evil enchantress in disguise, setting a trap).
I guess they're similar to that degree, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned".
My interpretations evolve over time.

I wouldn't have guessed a symbolism/idea of "Before We Knew Thee", but it sounds interesting.
At first, I thought that this man sacrificed a lot of time for this woman and now he can't escape (hence this ladder and lack of legs), but he tries to end a relationship and cut her hair (and maybe close her in the tower too). The man has a blindfold, because he was blind, while she has no face, because he really doesn’t know who she is ( this sentence sounds like from a soap opera ^^). In her hands the scissors will be a symbol of attachment and/or power, but in his hands it will be an escape.
But now I have a big mess in my head and I feel that my brain is sore.
(sorry for my English, if there are mistakes)

nilwilnil In reply to SoundEater [2018-04-07 15:31:11 +0000 UTC]
Ooh, I like your interpretation. The blindfold does indicate blindness, the man goes blind in the fairytale. And we have similar ideas about the scissors, I think of them as a weapon he is reluctant to bequeath. The rest of the meanings are a bit cloudy, I don't usually determine my ideas too specifically.
(Your English is very good! How do you make that green arrow? Have you been drawing lately?)

She was captured in a tower, and let her hair grow.
Now she transformed into a tower, lost her head, even when she was giving head ( Lou Reed, Walk On the propper side) Though who need´s a head, when there is hair. Of course you cannot hang yourself. I wonder what she will do with the scissors
Yeah I thought the original story was kind of surreal, even though the brothers didn´t know what that is, at the time hmmm
will they ever know, no!
Love it

Many old fairy tales are definitely dark and surreal. The same with mythology and religions.
Another question might be, did the surrealists realize they weren't as innovative as they thought?
They were repeating history, in a sense, with their storytelling. Lou Reed could be considered a surreal bard himself. (Of course some people who are more precise about the term 'surreal' might disagree.)
Thanks again :]

Serious artists who are proper members of a functioning society and know where to put their art in... in drawers?
Yeah sure the, mostly stupid, viewer of some art has to have some nail in a wall where he can hang it at... just to say the least.
And a popular name, to make sure the price is right. How about selling art anyways?
The money probably changes everything, like love or ...being in a long dark tunnel, never ends ...haha my mind got astray, probably got shot out of a barrel. The mind sure is something like a cannon ball, you can´t deny the shape? omfg
Welcome, see!
