Chapter 4:  An Audience With An Avatar

At first, there was nothing but silence, but suddenly, Tsunami emerged once again into the clearing, battered and bruised, but very much alive.  "I was lucky," he muttered to himself.  He felt the place where the fireball had struck him.  If he hadn't still been wearing his South Pole parka, he would have been seriously injured--but the coat had caught most of the fire, so he escaped only slightly singed.  But more importantly, now he had a score to settle.  As if on cue, the pale-faced girl suddenly leaped out from the hole in the infirmary wall she'd created, and looked amazed to find him alive.  "Hello there," Tsunami said brightly, then without warning, he shot a torrent of water from between his cupped hands--moisture he'd created from the air.  The water turned to ice in the air, transforming into a rain of daggerlike projectiles instantly--only to be incinerated by a huge blast of fire from the girl's hands.  But before she could recover, Tsunami threw both of his boomerang-shaped swords right through the flames toward his opponent.  The swords caught both of her arms, pinning her to the infirmary wall.  "You can just hang around here until the warriors show up," Tsunami said icily.

Soon, the Kyoshi warriors had arrived, and the girl was in shackles, sitting in a chair in front of them--and Tsunami.  "Do you know this girl?"  Suki asked him as Tsunami put his swords back into their scabbards on his back.  "No--in fact, I've never seen her before in my life.  But whoever she is, she's definitely a firebender, and probably sent to eliminate me."  "Why you, though?  And how would she know you were on Kyoshi?"  "That, I don't know.  But I think we have more important things to worry about, Aunt Suki."  The two relatives excused themselves, leaving the girl in care of the rest of the Kyoshi warriors.  The girl watched him leave, and Tsunami could almost feel her red eyes boring into the back of his head as he left the room.  For an instant, he wondered--could she have something to do with the group who called themselves the New Fire Nation?  If so, how did they know about him?  But his questions remained unanswered as the two of them reached the Kyoshi Temple.

Once there, Suki waved him inside, but made no move to follow him.  Avatar Kyoshi herself had appeared to her in a vision the night before, asking that Tsunami attend her in her temple.  Tsunami knew that he had better do this alone.  Standing in front of Kyoshi's statue, Tsunami wasn't sure what he was supposed to do--until suddenly, a bright light shone from the statue's eyes.  Tsunami found himself surrounded by fog, in a room devoid of any features.  Kyoshi stood before him, but she was flesh and blood, not just a statue.  Beyond her, thousands of other Avatars sat in a line.  Tsunami could only imagine the numbers of people, all sharing the same life, all one person, and yet many.  And then, from the fog, a familiar figure stepped.  Tall, clad in gold robes and a large pendant at his chin, was a man he'd known only from pictures and stories told by his mother, but felt like he'd known all his life.

"Dad?"  Tsunami finally spoke up.

Looking down at him, his father seemed very intimidating--until he gave his son a warm smile.  "It's nice to finally meet you--Tsunami."  So many questions were running through Tsunami's head--he had known his dad had been the last Avatar, but why had he summoned him?  "No doubt you have questions, and I can understand that.  I don't have much time, but there are a few things I can fill you in on.  Right now, you know that the world is in chaos thanks to this group known as the "New Fire Nation".  And, it is the Avatar's duty to restore balance to the world."  "But Dad, I have no idea where to find you--Mom told me you disappeared before I was born."  His father was silent.  "Is that what she told you?"  Tsunami suddenly felt an extreme sense of foreboding.  "I suppose you were too young to know then--but in order for you to born, I had to die."  "I don't understand," Tsunami said, even though he was beginning to figure it out.  "In order to be reborn, an Avatar must first die, in order to be reincarnated into the next body--the next life.  So the instant before you were born, I died--so that you could live."  "Dad, why?"  "Do you not see it yet?"  Aang placed his finger upon Tsunami's forehead, and his eyes began to glow.  "Tsunami, YOU are the new Avatar!"

Like an explosion, Tsunami was ejected back into the real world.  For a while, he sat in stunned silence as he took in what he had just learned--and what he now had to do.  He took, from his pocket, a small pouch filled with holy water from the north pole--the only memento he had left of his mother--but he would not cry.  He was stronger than that.  Slowly he rose to his feet, a strong expression on his face.  He knew now that it was his job to stop the New Fire Nation--his duty to restore balance to the world.  And more than anything, he knew that he had to leave the island immediately.  Starting now, he was on a mission.
