Description Another technical drawing I did while I was away

This is a Continental Motors AVS Series V-12 air cooled petrol (gasoline) engine used in heavy tanks built after WWII Those of you who know the Continental name will see the utter similarity between this and the light aircraft piston engines the company is well known for

Power output is 850 BHP and maximum RPM's is 2,400. The twin fans on top cool the engine by blasting air into the "valley" between the two banks of finned cylinders. Those fans spin very fast and these engines will get LOUD!!! (I've heard them running full bore before ) Hydraulic clutches, controlled by oil temperature can cut those fans off when the engine is cool

These remained standard issue until the M-1 Abrams arrived with it's Lycoming gas turbine engine

There is a similar model to this called the AVDS series, which is essentially the same as this one, but it's a diesel

I believe that there is also a six cylinder version of this engine.

It looks great! How do you manage to draw so much detail?

Thanks! I hope to get more of these up here soon! Difficulties with PC access and scanners right now

Mmm...I see Any links to pics of the engine?

I'd like to do a drawing of the aircraft radial engines used in smaller tanks like the Chaffee, the Churchill, or the Walker Bulldog

Maybe a cutaway of that Allison controlled-differential crossdrive transmission Such an astonishingly complicated yet enduring piece of machinery

i,m sure there must be some illustrations of the Maybach powerplants out there, possibly the company may still have the original blueprints?

O___o!!!! I found some ....[link] Looks like they were similar in design as the Continental engines later on.

we probably copied from them after the war....

We probably did We took their technology of fuel injection and incorporated it into later build piston engines
