I did a rough sketch of how the scene would be structured and then started roughly blocking in everyhting with color. After that it was pretty much just refining things and adding details (areas where light is shining through branches, the actual branches, ...).
If you want I could send you some images of the progress this image went through, not sure how helpful that would be though.
