Description
I haven't posted anything new in a while and this technically isn't new since it's just a vector version of one of the older drawings in my gallery. You can see the original pencil version here: [link]Obviously the biggest change is that the picture has been completely redrawn in Adobe Illustrator. The second biggest difference is that he's wearing his full uniform now. When compared to the original, this version looks much more animated, so I did some post-processing in Photoshop and tried to make it look like an animation cel layered over a background. No real reason, just thought it looked cool.
Still some areas I want to clean up and redo, but this is a very slow, very labor-intensive process, so I'm not sure how long it will be before I get this looking "perfect."

Is this what Hank used to look like before he turned blue and furry?

Pretty much, yeah. I don't think I took too many liberties with the design. His ears weren't always showing through his mask, but every once in a while they were drawn as visible and I've always preferred that look.

Wow! I'm not sure what to say that hasn't been said better by someone else. Great lines, beautiful colors, and a gentle face with so much personality behind it. Bravo, my friend.

I think you were really successful at capturing that color-saturated, flashy comic feel. I really liked the hairdo of the original and am sad that it's gone, but the old costume really, really, really takes me back to a long time back when old X-men really rocked my world.
Only negative comment is that the "lighting" seems to harsh on the skintone. Thanks for putting in all the world here, this looks great.

The hairdo isn't gone, it's just not in this version. I've actually got several different variations of this drawing all wrapped up in one file, which is one of the things that I like the most about working digitally.
Also, those harsh breaks are a stylistic choice, because I was going for an animated movie feel to this. However, I can see where some of them are much harsher and sharper than is necessary, so I'll look into toning them down as I continue to develop the drawing. Thanks!

Thanks! I liked how the uniform used all three primary colors, so I decided to figure out a way to work the three secondary colors in there as well. Although, I did subdue them a bit. I wanted it to have that super-colorful and unjaded comic book feel to it without looking too garish.

First I want to say thank-you for this pic and the others you've worked on. Love your work and the source material (Hughes' bros, Hank McKoy, Beast). Great choices. Curious to know who else you'll use for inspiration. Ben Browder (circa Farscape) looks like he'd be a natural fit among the guys you've chosen. Looking forward to seeing more of Stump. Thanks again.

Thanks! Beast has been my favorite comic book superhero for well over 20 years now, so he'll always be a main focus of my drawings. I've also got big plans for Stump, but I think the storyline that I've written for the character has vastly outgrown my drawing ability. As for Matt and Mark, well they'll be friends of mine for the rest of my life, so I'm sure that I come up with some reason to photograph them again in the future.
I'll have to look up this Ben Browder guy. If he is the person I'm thinking of, then I can see what you mean.

Thank you! I can post a break down of it so you can see all the different layers that go into it, if you want. It's really a simple process, 95% of it is just using the pencil tool in Illustrator. The rest involves gradients and a little bit of the direct selection tool. The drawing is nothing but filled shapes. There's not a single stroke or gradient mesh in the image at all.

I would so love to see a break down of this, I can't tell you! I have absolutely NO CLUE how to use Illustrator, I am so a pencil on paper girl and probably always will be -- do you do this entire piece in Illustrator or do you do a sketch and scan it and then refine it in Illustrator? I am amazed by this. I would love it if you would be so sweet and show it to all of us who have no clue! (and if it's Hank ... well, all the better! )

looks great. He has such an adorable face. You have a good way of drawing nice hands and feet. That can be kind of hard.

This is a great piece! Matt Hughes is one of my all time favs and it just cracks me up (in a good way) to see him as Beast, it's pretty cool. I'm planning on a few MMA wallpapers, signature banners and such and Hughes is on my "list" of fighters. My first mini-poster is done, its of The Iceman Chuck Liddell. Looks like we're both turning MMA fighters into X-Men, except your work is better then mine
