Common merfolk are highly unusual creatures. At an average length of about 1.6 meters or 6 feet, they are close in size as the average human. The humanoid hands and facial features also sell the illusion of an aquatic humanoid. However, Merfolk are only very distantly related to humans. Their closest relatives are new world monkeys like the capuchin. Merfolk are shy herbivores that feed on kelp and shellfish. They are rarely sighted in busy waters and avoid places where they have had bad experiences. Like their terrestrial cousins, Merfolk live in groups of a few dozen individuals. Males are usually larger than the females and it is their job to protect the flock from predators. Some Mermen go to the extreme of dragging victims to the depths of the water to drown them. Thanks to their streamlined body shape and strong seal like flippers Merfolk are extremely fast swimmers and are not to be underestimated when it comes to agility. Like many aquatic or semi aquatic mammals Merfolk need to come ashore to breed. Young are raised in shallow pools where they can practice swimming until they are ready for the deep waters of kelp forests.
