it's great to use larger stones in a tension setting like this. there is so much tension on the stone that there is no way it would move or come out, unless you used a hammer.

Is that a punched piece of barstock? It looks like it has a ground surface, but also looks like 5 punched holes (with the typical blowout associated with the method), as opposed to drilling, laser cutting, wire EDM, or any other method of putting holes in metal.

no, the holes were made with an end mill. the perspective of the photo is what makes the holes look blown out. i don't think i could fit a punch in my studio big enough to punch 10mm thick stainless steel...or find one that could punch 3mm holes through stainless that thick.
you seem to know a bit about machining...
