Description
A new version of the primarch of the Salamanders. Old drawing: noldofinve.deviantart.com/art/…
It was quite hard to bring Vulkan into correlation with any Earth culture. It seems there are some African influence but this connection between the Salamanders aand African cultures isn't so clear. So I took an ancient Nubian guard as a "prototype" of Vulkan as my husband suggested. Several artwork of Ludwig Deutsch were very helpful in this my small research: forum.artinvestment.ru/blog.ph…

Personally I like the salamanders depicted as having african features but with inhumanly black skin and red eyes. But this is sooooo goood i cant complain

THANK YOU so much for giving him proper ethnicity instead of that bad joke by GW. Fun fact: the story of Saint George and the Dragon is huge in Ethiopia, which had a great many Christian converts in the Middle Ages. Fire-breathing lizards and saving people in distress? Sounds a lot like the Salamanders to me

I do really prefer the Salamanders looking like a normal "black" person, with a deep brown skin pigmentation as opposed to onyx. While I do like Nick Kyme's work, it's just weird how so many chapters and legions represent specific cultures, and yet the Salamanders look nothing like theirs at all. Death Guard (loyalist) were Croatian, Space Wolves are Celtic/Scandinavian, Crimson Fists are Spanish, Ultramarines are Roman/Italian, etc. But then the Salamanders are supposed to have some African culture traits... but look like an incredibly racist comical appearance. I get that it's old fluff, it just looks, weird. Like you could never go out in public with it as a costume without somebody punching you kind of weird. I do get that in fluff they're supposed to look the most frightening but be the kindest of all Astartes, but this just looks far better.
And as for the art, fantastic.

I sometimes wonder if Salamanders having "African" traits is mostly just an assumption fans make based on their being "black"... In fact, I'd argue that the Salamanders are actually Scandinavian-themed, as the dragon/smithing aspects of their characterisation, combined with their inhumanly pigmented dark skin and red eyes, make them seem far more like the dark elves (dwarfs) of Norse mythology by way of D&D's Drow than anything recognisably sub-Saharan.

Благодарю. ) Я рисую собственное представление примархов, не претендующее на каноничность. "Капюшон" - это элемент облачения нубийского стражника, выше я написала, что повлияло на такой образ Вулкана.
Стишок вряд ли напишет. А вот стихотворение - скорее всего, да.

Очень необычно!
Я всегда думал, что у Сапамандр были греко-африканские прототипы, ведь даже у африканцев были свои боги кузнечного ремесла.
Но так Вулкану даже больше идёт - и кстати, вспомнился роман "Копи царя Соломона". По той причине, что там упоминаются кольчуги из некоего металла, а на голове примарха над бурнусом виден кольчужный капюшон.
Кстати, что было прототипом для букв на ободах наплечников? Часом, не амхарская письменность?

Это да, но привязка к грекам не катит по той причине, что есть, например, Ультрамарины и Жиллиман, а к ярко-выраженной Африке - я не нашла каких-то характерных элементов в, скажем так, культуре Саламандр. Нубийцы мне видятся наиболее близким прототипом, в том числе по доспехам.
Буквы на ободах разработала одна мохнатая лапка, которая пыталась словить стилус. )

Oh man, I remember being so miffed when they changed the fluff to the Salamander being LITERALLY black-skinned as opposed to looking like sub-saharan Africans. I'd always thought it was cool that there was some racial/phenotype-diversity in the 41st millennium.
