I will say this- I'm on my second hawke right now.. Hawke 2.0 is a snarky mage, and I just finished "Family Matters" with him. They're leaving Bartrand's estate afterwards, and hawke says something to the effect of "come on, let's drink till we can't see straight. that always makes you feel better" and Varric is all "I dunno. I don't think watching you make yourself sick is going to cheer me up. Much." (paraphrasing, but I wish I'd written it down. Was very funny) (Very different dialogue from when I played through with Woobie Rogue Hawke 1.0)
