Description
The Fur Shader is now mostly mastered !!!Instead of the "shell" technique which was giving me some major issue on the transparency, I followed the advise of another UE4 user and try the parallax technique, complete succes !
The last step is now to add PhysX to the model, I already did a quick try and it's pretty easy, now it's time to do it seriously, after that it will be time for a small prototype video.
Base skin texture made by and improved/converted into PBR capable by myself in Substance Painter 2.
Base fur shader code taken from 'Last Dream" www.youtube.com/channel/UCTOEe… and edited by myself.

[UPDATE] EARLY WIP
HairWorks integration in the UE4 done, so it was a new occasion to try another way to make fur.
This is a really early WIP demo, lot of stuff havent been fine tuned, it was a "test run" to see how it might look.

Woah this is really great. I bet it'll be hard for everyone who tries to use this texture without it looking weird.

This was from an old experimentation, my fur pipeline have completely changed since then.

So you made animations based one the new one. Well actually you already made a post about your fur changes already?

No public animation using my new fur system yet.

Okay then, I guess I'll see it much later then I guess.

This is... Very interesting.
I do have to agree with what Flora-Tea said on this, that it does make the mlook liek stuffed toys, but on the other hand, this is something I've been interested on seeing what this looks like for some time.
I can't help but wonder if the fur being to prominent will kinda make the characters uncanny in animation, or just hard to look at with all the wavy fur and detail, but whatever.
I'd like to see where this goes. Nice job.

I'm currently moving to the HairWorks (Nvidia) solution instead of the 'parallax" techniques showed on the screenshot here, since HairWorks have the biggest advantage to be PhysX compatible directly from the start.

I'm looking forward to seeeing how that turns out. Good luck with that.

For a moment there, I thought that was a close-up photo of a real Sonic Plushie Doll, until I zoomed in. That's some exceptional CGI there if you made it look THAT realistic!

That's exactally what I thought.

This is incredible! I've realized as of late, though, that when there are super realistic textures on things like "Mobians" or any characters that are incredibly stylized and cartoony, it kind of makes them look like stuffed toys that have come to life.
Additionally, it looks rather off how with Tails, his cheek fluff strands and each strand of hair has such short strands which actually makes Tails look more stuffed-toy-like than Blaze.
In the case of Sonic characters, I feel that simplistic and cartoony fur texture would be more fitting than hyper-realistic teddy bear fur, you know? It may also be the fact the fur is so short and perked and all the strands go the same direction that makes the characters look like toys, here.

Tails still need minor adjust indeed, I have to completely split its material slot in order to fine tuning each part of its body.

I actualy try to make the fur react to the wind set on the map, I have a valid source code for that but it was set for the "shell" technique shader, not the "parallax" one used here, I'm trying to make it compatible with the current code, but I don't know what you mean exactly by "simplistic and cartoony fur texture", if you have an example I could give a check.
Also for now, I'm not sure if I will add this fur effect to the others Sonic cast member (except on the fur torso of Shadow and Silver), I still have the bad memory of the Sonic fur from the live action fan film xD

Ooooh I see.
Hmmm I'll have to get back to you on that example haha
Also, I completely understand the bad memory thing XD However, I think it would look very jarring to have only some characters that are furry animals to have fur textures and then others to not have any fur texture (or to have them in only one place), you know? I feel as though when it comes to styles or certain design choices, there should be consistency! Perhaps if the fur was more subtle? I don't know haha

DAMN!
It looks like the Sonic fan film done right.
(Though I'm not too convinced on the style. At first glance, it kind of looked like wool. But that's just me.)
