The Republic Defense Force's new 'Instrumentality Light Carrier was designed to be just that - a drone carrier of modest proportions that could then leverage the adaptable nature of those drones to provide force multiplication abilities to other, more specialized, assets. These would come to include warships like the 'Starlight battleships - for target acquisition, verification, and engagement - as well as more regular-purpose frigates and destroyers where the 'Instrumentality would 'fill in' as the command element in a 'Group rather than a cruiser or dreadnought.

Like most modern Defense Force designs, the 'Class takes the form of a particularly angry looking horseshoe. The primary crew space is located at the base of the 'nose' while the sweeping arms are mostly filled with four completely automated drone storage, maintenance, launch, and recovery systems - the bays for these are located behind the tip and at the base of the arms. Slower-than-light propulsion occupies the four wings/winglets and the faster-than-light drive spindle is generated from the prongs at fore and aft. The primary defensive system is a variable synthetic particle array and the design is only lightly armored. While it might seem reasonable for a 'carrier' to carry a substantial number of sub-craft, this is only mildly the case - it does carry more, but even here only a small number of man-able fighters, shuttles, and the like.

Crew totals, like all post '173 designs, are minimal with the 'Instrumentality having (admittedly luxurious) berths for twenty-three. The design does have more modular cargo space than others as a ratio of volume, but this might allow for a maximum evacuation capacity of a thousand Human-average sentients if the need was pushed.
